Street Cleaning - Read the Signs!

South Boston Neighborhood Street Cleaning Pilot Program

New Hours of Operation Effective Wednesday, April 1

The hours of operation for the South Boston Neighborhood Street Cleaning program are changing in an effort to better accommodate the needs of neighborhood residents.  Street cleaning in South Boston will take place between the hours of 9AM and 1PM, and 1 PM and 5 PM, on designated days.  The new schedule will go into effect on the first day that this seasonal program resumes - Wednesday, April 1, 2009.

The schedule change is a joint effort of Mayor Thomas M. Menino and South Boston District City Councilor William Linehan.  It is being implemented as a pilot program only and will be closely monitored with adjustments being made as necessary.

Boston Transportation Commissioner Thomas J. Tinlin said, "South Boston residents have asked that the street cleaning schedule be changed to allow more residents to leave for work, taking their cars with them, before parking restrictions take effect.  The intent is to provide more available parking spaces for vehicles remaining on residential streets."

Boston's Neighborhood Street Cleaning Program is a cooperative effort of the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Services, the Public Works Department and the Transportation Department.  It runs annually from April 1 through November 30.  The street sweeping schedule for specific streets is available at www.cityofboston.gov/publicworks/sweeping.  Residents are also invited to register for "No Tow" email reminders on this page.  "No Tow" is a service provided by the city for residents to be reminded by email when the street that they regularly park on is scheduled for cleaning.

Signs are posted on neighborhood streets outlining the street cleaning schedule for that particular street.  During the last two weeks of March, courtesy flyers are placed on the windshields of vehicles parked on residential streets to notify motorists of the parking restrictions associated with the program.

From April 1 through November 30, Parking Enforcement Officers will distribute $40 tickets to vehicles parked in violation of the regulations and vehicles will be subject to removal by private tow operators at the sole expense of the vehicle owner.  Street cleaning parking regulations are strictly enforced and drivers are urged to pay close attention to the posted regulations.
