Jimmy Flaherty Kick-Off Breakfast

The SBCA (the South Boston Citizens’ Association) is pleased to announce that the Jimmy Flaherty 2010 Kickoff Breakfast will take place in the Cornerstone Pub on Saturday morning, February 28, at 10 a.m. (the doors to the Cornerstone will open at 9:30 a.m.).  The Annual Henry Knox “Unsung Heroes” Awards will be made.

Families, friends, and neighbors are cordially invited to attend this wonderful event.  The Kickoff Breakfast will be catered by those South Boston favorites, the Famolare family.  The great music of Bob Fowkes and Curragh’s Fancy will be featured again this year.

This year’s Kickoff Breakfast Chairman is state Senator John “Jack” Hart, who is leading the fight to preserve the historic importance of Evacuation Day.  “As President of the SBCA, it is an honor for me to appoint the Senator and my lifelong friend to kick off the festivities.  Jack’s commitment and involvement with the SBCA has been a tremendous asset to me and the SBCA Executive Board”, said Tom McGrath.

The Awards are presented to everyday volunteers in the community, who seek no recognition and who are considered “Unsung Heroes”.  This year’s awardees are John “Chico” Silva, Michael Caputo, and Josh Parra for their heroic efforts in apprehending two purse snatchers until the police arrived; John Picariello of the South Boston Youth Hockey League, for his countless hours of e-mail communications and informational postings regarding league matters, neighborhood meetings, and issues; Barbie Loftus, who has been quietly involved in the community both past and present, whether it be through her professional career as a juvenile probation officer or through her hobby as a jewelry maker, donating time and gifts to many people and organizations in need; and finally, Jim Brock, owner of Boston Home Inspectors, whose financial assistance has benefited many of South Boston’s youth organizations throughout the years.

Tom McGrath, President of the SBCA, said, “It is an honor to recognize these individuals, who dedicate their time and energy to the South Boston community.  I hope the community will join me and others on Saturday, the 27th, to honor these men and women.”

Tickets may be purchased at the door for $10, or by contacting Tom McGrath at (857)204-5825 for personal delivery.
