Two Medical Marijauna Sites Approved in Boston
By Rick Winterson

70 Southampton Street in the Newmarket Business District, one of two sites in the City of Boston approved for a medical marijuana dispensary.

The two sites in Boston include 70 Southampton Street, which is in the Newmarket Business District, a block away from the intersection with Massachusetts Avenue and an access ramp to Interstate 93.  This location is also near existing methadone dispensaries and is a few minutes’ drive from Andrew Square.

The second site is at 364 Boylston Street in Boston’s Back Bay.  It is located between the intersections of Arlington and Berkeley Streets with Boylston, near the Public Garden, the Arlington Street Church, the Taj, and Jos. A. Banks.  These locations were determined by state authorities; the City of Boston had no say in these decisions.

South Boston Online will wait to see the reaction of abutters, nearby residents and businesses, and concerned organizations.  The original Massachusetts ballot initiative on medical marijuana passed overwhelmingly – by a two-to-one vote.  And admittedly, marijuana is a useful medicine in certain cases.  Even so, no neighborhood or civic groups have been willing to allow these dispensaries anywhere near them.  In fact, the 70 Southampton site is approximately 2000 feet away from Roxbury’s Orchard Garden K-8 School.

South Boston Online has editorialized against medical marijuana in the past.  But before we say anything more about this issue, South Boston Online asks its readers to answer the following questions:  How was it ever possible for a major Federal felony to become a Massachusetts ballot initiative?  Who’s in charge around here?
