Lanterns in No Man's Land
By Rick Winterson

So far, Medicine Wheel has held five events in No Man’s Land behind the High School during July and August.  These events included cookout style refreshments and entertainment.  Each of these events is highlighted by a special activity, in which everyone takes part.  And they are (and will be) all free.  Everyone is invited.

Following through on the five events already held, Medicine Wheel Productions has planned some special Wednesday evening events during August.  The coming event on August 14 will feature Ron Murphy singing live, accompanied by Jonathan Stapleton (keyboard), Wesley Worth (bass), Alvin Terry (drums), and Wannetta Jackson (guest vocalist).  The evening begins at 5 p.m.; Ron and his group will perform from 7 p.m. until 10.

The next Wednesday, August 21, the Woods School of Irish Dance and the Cushing Women will entertain.  Both of these events will held in back of the High School; both events will be full evenings, with music, refreshments, and good fellowship.  And once again, they are free and open to all.

Medicine Wheel’s final summer get-together will be on Castle Island on Wednesday evening, August 28 from 7 till 9 p.m.  It is called “Beacon to the Dream”; it will mark the 50th Anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.  Dr. King gave that epoch-making speech on August 28, 1963.

Don’t miss that observance.  Participants will march to Castle Island and encircle Pleasure Bay with these lanterns, which are constructed with translucent blue paper.  Thousands are expected to take part.  It will be the sight (and event) of the summer, if not of a lifetime.  Once again, don’t miss it.
