MASSACHUSETTS PORT AUTHORITY
TO SPONSOR BOSTON LANDMARKS ORCHESTRA AT
MARITIME PARK, SOUTH BOSTON
Cultural Highlight takes place from 6:30- 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 21st
The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) will present an exciting evening of classical music when the acclaimed Boston Landmarks Orchestra performs at Massport's waterfront Maritime Park in South Boston on Thursday, July 21, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. This free concert is the first of five in a summer series entitled "Baroque in Boston" performed by the Boston Landmarks Orchestra.
"Performances by the Boston Landmarks Orchestra are one of this season's favorite attractions," said Craig Coy, Massport CEO. "Massport is proud to again take part in presenting one of Boston's best cultural offerings to local neighborhood residents."
With Charles Ansbacher conducting, audience members will enjoy selections from Respighi including Ancient Airs and Dances Set III, Bach's Violin Concerto in E Major and Telemann's Don Quixote.
The South Boston Maritime Park is a 1.3 acre parcel located on Northern Avenue and D Street and was opened last summer after careful planning by Massport, the South Boston community and leading Boston landscape architects. Fountains, pergolas, sculpture, canopied trees and an outdoor café operated by the owners of the Farragut House are some of its special attractions.
Maritime Park connects the working waterfront to commercial development in South Boston and honors Boston's rich maritime heritage and modern day activities within the Port of Boston.
The park was recently recognized with two prestigious awards including the Boston Society of Architects "Award for Design" and Boston Society of Landscape Architects "Honor Award for Parks and Recreation Facilities."
This year marks the first time the Boston Landmarks Orchestra will perform in Massport's newest waterfront park. Concert-goers are welcome to bring chairs and blankets, but should refrain from bringing alcohol.
The Boston Landmarks Orchestra performs free summer concerts in sites that celebrate historical, geographical and architectural settings. It is a non-profit organization founded in January 2001 that relies on support from foundations, corporations and individuals. The orchestra's mission is to foster a broad appreciation for classical music in diverse communities of Boston by presenting exceptional performances in significant settings.
