Revised Fort Point Plan Presented
By Rick Winterson

In part due to input from concerned residents in South Boston’s Fort Point District, the BRA revised its plan for developing that area.  This revised proposal was presented by the BRA at the Convention Center last Tuesday, January 17.  Any plan of this size, even a revision, is complex.  Even so, there are a few main features worth mentioning.

The green areas have been rearranged so as to connect with each other through the center of the development.  This provides a “greenway” from the Convention Center directly to the Fort Point watersheet and to a proposed walking bridge across to the South Station area.  There will be a view corridor extending from downtown across Fort Point.

In the revised BRA proposal, higher buildings have been rearranged so as to frame and preserve the neighborhood “feeling” unique to Fort Point.  Maximum heights have been reduced from 200 feet to 180 feet.

Many questions, from tax structure, to further mitigations, to insuring that developers will adhere to the recommendations, were raised, but there was overall agreement that the new Fort Point proposal is close to acceptable.

Two further BRA proposals for that general area will be presented to the public at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 25 (Waterside Crossing, Massport Parcel D-3), and at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 26 (Fargo Building at 451 D Street).  Both public meetings will be held in Room 101 at the Convention Center.
