The Gate of Heaven C.Y.O. held its 20th Annual Fundraiser last Saturday evening in the parish hall. Twenty years have passed since the inception of this fundraiser and over those years we have had a lot of fun and done a lot of good. We would like to thank everyone who has ever supported the C.Y.O. over the past years and hope that the programs we have provided have made them proud of their relationship with the Gatey C.Y.O.
Over two hundred people enjoyed the evening’s full course Turkey Dinner, open bar and the entertainment of crowd pleasing crooner Bobby Diamond. We would like to thank Daniel J. Flynn III for donating Bruins tickets and Gift certificates to Captain Fishbones and Mike Taylor for Basketball tickets for our consolation prizes. The Grand Prize was split by the final five participants. Mt. Washington Bank was one of the final five and donated the prize back to the C.Y.O. We would like to thank Mt. Washington for their generosity and thank them for all their support over the years. Congratulations go out to the other four winners Ted Gavagan, Lisa O’Toole, Karen Florentino and Kevin Devlin.
Members of the original committee and long time members and supporters of the C.Y.O. who are no longer with us were remembered during the event. The evening was dedicated in memory of one of the founders, Ann Flynn who served as the Banquet Chairwoman. May she and all the deceased benefactors of our program rest eternally in God’s Love.
This was the last fundraiser or any event to be held in the Gate of Heaven Parish Hall. The Hall has been sold to the South Boston Neighborhood House in order to raise funds to complete the renovations on the Church. We wish the “Ollie” the best of luck in their endeavors and hope to work with them in the future to keep the Gate of Heaven C.Y.O. alive and active in their new facility.
The Rev. Paul V. Donovan Award for the parish Outstanding Catholic Youth is presented annually to a person who exemplifies the best of what it means to live out the Catholic faith in today’s society. This award is presented as an expression of our pride in the youth of our parish.
The criteria used in selecting the recipient are based on participation in parish C.Y.O. activities, on church attendance, and on personal characteristics which evidence a commitment to the Christian faith.
The 2006 Outstanding Catholic Youth Award was presented by Senator Jack Hart to Erin Elizabeth McDonough.
Erin is a Junior at Fontbonne Academy in Milton and the daughter of William “Touchie” and Denise McDonough.
Erin has been a member of the Fontbonne Basketball program for 3 years, played freshman volleyball and was a member of the sophomore Honor Committee. She has participated in the C.Y.O. programs since she was 7 years old and has played and coached both basketball & volleyball for the Gatey.
We wish Erin the best now and in all her future endeavors.
The Jack McDonough Award is presented annually to the Outstanding Alumni Member of the Year who exemplifies Christianity in Today’s society and the goals of the Gate of Heaven C.Y.O. and it’s Alumni Association.
This year’s recipient was Joseph W. Kelly. Joe is married to Barbara Caputo Kelly and has three children, Christine, Brendan and Patrick.
In 1980 Joe went up to the Gatey Hall to watch his future brother-in-law play in the Cadet Basketball House League and never left. For over 25 years he has been coaching and assisting with the Gate of Heaven programs coaching in every division of both the boys and girls House League as well as Travel Teams. Joe has coached and officiated in the B.N.B.L. and ADSL Leagues and has coached in Little League, Youth Soccer and Youth Hockey. Anytime at any athletic venue you can usually find Joe helping out or just watching the game. We thank him for his years of service to the youth of South Boston and hope he is around as long as Injun.
We thank everyone who attended or contributed towards this annual event. Special thanks to Tom Butler & Massport, George Locassio, Tom Cusack and Senator Hart for all their help.
