City Year Service Day May 12
By Jenny McInerney

You’ve seen us-at your child’s school or after-school program, eating at one of Southie’s excellent dining establishments, or attending community meetings for the neighborhood we have come to love.  Our red jackets proudly proclaim that we are members of City Year, an AmeriCorps program that unites “teams” of 16-24 year olds from across the country and deploys those teams into neighborhoods to perform ten months of community service.  Ten City Year Corps Members currently serve among you, at the Condon and Perkins Elementary Schools and the South Boston Boys and Girls Club, the South Boston Neighborhood House and an after-school program at Condon Elementary School.

While our service mainly consists of tutoring and mentoring children, each City Year team also has the opportunity to plan a day of physical service in the neighborhood in which it serves.  On this day, the team invites both Corps Members working in other neighborhoods across Boston as well as their neighborhood’s residents to engage in a powerful day of service.

As members of Southie’s team of City Year Corps Members, we are doing all in our power to make our “Signature Service Day” not simply a day of physical service, but also an opportunity to celebrate the bonds we have formed, the friendships we have made, and the incredible spirit of the Southie community.

We welcome you to join us on Friday, May 12, 2006 in physical service ranging from painting indoor and outdoor murals to landscaping.  Approximately fifteen projects will take place at Old Colony, Perkins Elementary School, and the South Boston Neighborhood House, but we can’t do it alone!  Throughout our time in Southie, we have been repeatedly amazed and impressed by the pride and commitment residents have shown to their community, and we ask that you do so once again and consider signing up to volunteer your time at this event.

Registration on May 12th will begin at 8 a.m., and service will run from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., with an hour break for lunch. Volunteers will be contacted with additional information as the date nears.  Applications can be picked up and returned to various community organizations and churches, including the South Boston Resource Center (489 East Broadway).  Please e-mail Linda Krishnan at LKrishnan06@cityyear.org or call Jason Tierney at (617)-927-2531 with any questions.

Thank you for welcoming us into your community, and we hope to see you on May 12th!
