Kelly and Tynan to Be Honored
By Rick Winterson

It may seem a bit early, but the “Southie time” to celebrate two lifetimes of service to South Boston will take a lot of planning.  And the Planning Committee, who are arranging the banquet for Jimmy Kelly and “Doc” Tynan, are already hard at work.  They are determined that every last detail will be perfect.

So let’s go over a few details.  The banquet is scheduled to begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday evening, September 9, at the Boston Teachers Union Hall.  Tickets are expected to be $30 each, with full tables going for $300.  Depending on the exact setup in the Hall, about 500 can be accommodated.  For two such South Boston notables as Jimmy and “Doc”, tickets and tables are expected to go very rapidly.  Since an exact count will be needed in advance for the caterer, no tickets will be sold at the door on the evening of the 9th.

A social hour will begin the evening at 6:30 p.m.  Promptly at 7:30 p.m., a complete, banquet-style dinner will be served.  At 9 p.m., Past Fitzgerald Post Commander Joe Murphy will take on the role of emcee for what he promises will be a short program.  Mayor Thomas Menino, a close friend of both “Doc” and Jimmy, will be asked to deliver a few keynote remarks.  Then, John Mullen and Wilbur “Bibby” Lewis will present the respective awards to Jimmy Kelly and to John “Doc” Tynan.

That’s all there is to the program.  There will be no long panel of speakers.  The Planning Committee wants everyone to come and enjoy an evening of non-stop fun and fellowship, with the ceremonies kept to a minimum.  It’s still being discussed, but there probably won’t be a head table either, so that everyone will feel free to stop by and say “Hello” to Jimmy and “Doc” as the evening progresses.

The entertainment alone will be memorable.  South Boston’s favorite pianist, Peter Golemme, is teaming up with the multi-talented Mike Barrett between 6:30 and 9 p.m.  The Bobby Fowkes Band will take over at 9, and will play music for dancing until midnight.  It’s all live!

As a tangible tribute to both Jimmy and “Doc”, arrangements are underway to put commemorative marble benches in their names within the World War II Memorial at the Sugar Bowl.  Details such as the precise engraving are still being worked out.  The funding for the benches is coming from the Brown Fund, which is overseen by Robert Fleming.  Tommy Butler of MassPort has already promised significant support as well.  And, of course, the Kelly and Tynan “time” is being spearheaded by the merry band at the Fitzgerald Post.

The point here is that the banquet on September 9 is not a fundraiser.  It will only be a great evening in honor of two of the most devoted citizens South Boston has ever seen.

(NOTE:  The entire weekend of September 9 and 10 will be filled with traditional Southie activities.  The Ollie Road Race occurs on Saturday and Sunday mornings; the Chamber’s Street Festival is scheduled for Saturday afternoon, until 5 p.m.  The Banquet for Jimmy and “Doc” starts at 6:30 p.m.  Don’t miss that weekend, for sure!)
