Fun in the Sun

By Kevin Devlin

The South Boston Summer Collaborative Program keeps the kids busy and happy from July 5 through August 19. Program sites include the Tynan, the Condon, the Boys and Girls Club, as well as the Neighborhood House.

The mission of the collaborative is simple. Keep the youngsters involved and engaged.

At the different sites, arts and crafts, swimming lessons, movies, special events, trips, various board games, gym activities, computer lessons, and library access are offered to all of the children.

At the Club, Fun in the Sun Director Anne Gordon, along with her two assistants, Josh Davis and Bartek Konieczny, are quite busy making sure the youngsters are having fun while abiding by the rules set forth by the program.

At the Club gym, the kids play basketball, dodge ball, kick ball, soccer, and floor hockey. The club also has a Discovery Program, arts and crafts, and a Computer Clubhouse that introduces many kids to the world of cyberspace.

In the games room, the kids play chess, checkers, Four Square, Monopoly, Connect Four, billiards, pool, air hockey, ping pong, and bumper pool.  Swimming lessons are also available every day at the pool. Special events such as movie trips, Hawaiian Luaus, dances, harbor cruises, trips to the zoo, Science Museum, and the Aquarium are also conducted.

At the Tynan, Director Patricia Broderick and Assistant Director Mark Doran are also busy, keeping a watchful and concerned eye over their youngsters. In the gym, hoopla hoop, basketball, wiffle ball, stickball, and flag football are played everyday. Arts and crafts, board games, and special events enjoyed by the Club kids, are also enjoyed by the Tynan kids on a weekly basis. And, the Tynan kids journey every day to the Condon to be cool in the pool.

It’s a great program with dedicated staff persons effectively doing their job while the kids are having fun in the sun.
