Mount St. Joseph Eyes Title
By Joe Kelly

After posting a very impressive regular season record of 17 and 3 and a tough loss in the MIAA state semi-finals last year the Eagles hope to get another shot this year. Head Coach Tommy McGrath and assistant coach Joe Cook are looking for “veteran leadership” from their three seniors Kasey Cedorchuk, Julee Sheehan and Katlelyn McIrney. Also returning is sophomore goalie Alexa Hynes who posted one of the top goals against averages in the state last season. Despite losing three key seniors to graduation including Southie’s Shaelyn Holmes and Meghan Cook, Joe’s daughter, coach McGrath said they are in good shape for this season.

“We have very good mix of players by class with five freshman coming in and all are able to contribute” said Tommy. The Eagles have taken on a tougher schedule this year with more division one opponents including Needham, Norwood and Latin Academy.

Mount will be splitting their home games this year between the Murphy Rink in South Boston and the Reilly Rink at Cleveland Circle. “Our hope is that more city girls will think about Mount St. Joseph for high school and by playing some home games here they can come out and see our hockey program” says Tommy.

Last week Mount scrimmaged Marty McDonough’s talented Latin squad and played them tough for long stretches. “We have the talent, balance and goaltending so we should do well this year” said Tommy enthusiastically.

The Eagles open the season Monday the 12th vs. Austin Prep and Monday the 19th vs. Notre Dame of Hingham, both games are 7:30pm start times and at Reilly Rink in Cleveland Circle. They will play their first Murphy Rink home game on Friday the 23rd at 6:00pm vs. Needham.

The Eagles are Alexa Hynes, Kasey Cerorchuk, Megan Graham, Megan Daniels, Katelyn McIrney, Kerry Fitzgerald, Martina Buczynski, Julee Sheehan, Julia Irwin, Paula Breen, Katie Grew, Justine Forcione, Taylor O’Neil, Laura Basile, Kylie Watron, Catherine Tagiatela and Jackie O’Brien.
