Latin Girls Hockey Rolling Along
By Joe Kelly

After a slow start the Wolfpack have strung together 12 straight to take control of the Dual County League.

Coach Marty McDonough has been at the helm of the Boston Latin Girls Hockey program for the past 7 years. During his tenure his teams have captured one Division 2 State championship and one Division 1 State championship. They almost recorded a third title but dropped a 4-overtime thriller in the 2001 finals. Coach McDonough recorded his 100th victory while at Latin earlier this year and currently stands at 112 wins with only 19 loses, he has also been named Coach of the Year twice.

Seven South Boston girls that include co-captain seniors Jill Mahoney, 13 points, and Elizabeth Balaconis, 10 points, anchor this year’s team. While most teenagers do not look forward to practice Elizabeth was seen running laps around the inside of the Murphy Rink before taking the ice. The other five Southie girls include sophomores Katherine Pavone, a two goal game verse Wayland/Weston, and Alexandria Devlin. Freshwoman Brenna Walsh and Stefani McGrath, 13 points including 2 game winning goals and Olivia Collins.

Assistant coach Mary Balaconis has been with Marty the entire seven years and is about to see her second daughter graduate from the team. Mary also coach’s the successful South Boston Angels girl’s team and is proud of how far girl’s hockey has come. “South Boston and Hyde Park/West Roxbury have always had very good programs for girls, hopefully the rest of the city will pick it up” said Mary. She proudly pointed out the success of the Latin Academy program and the talented bunch of South Boston girls on that squad. When asked about Elizabeth graduating and where her coaching stands she seemed a bit emotional and said with a smile “I don’t want to talk about that right now”.

Coach McDonough has won the Dual County League all seven seasons since taking over the program and explains his success on always having “those special players, especially the seniors, it will be sad to see them leave”. He adds, “After a slow start this is the longest win streak we have ever had. It’s been fun to see their improvement not only as hockey players but as young ladies”.

The offensive firepower comes from sophomore Kathleen Roche who leads the team with 34 points including a four-goal game and two game winners. Co-captain Amy Kotowski’s 21 points and a very impressive six game winning goals follow her. The rest of the Wolfpack are co-captain Samantha Morrissey (18 points), Casha Chillemi, Ann-Marie Elvin, Jayme DeFlurin, Colleen Doogan, Diana Kelly, Tiana Tassinari, Shannon Devlin, Kaitlin Joyce, Alena Wolflink, Julia MacKinnon and Goalie Siobhan Elvin.
