O'Brien's Club Wins Gatey Hoop Title
By Kevin Devlin

On Monday evening, February 13, O’Brien’s Club center Joe Arias (12 points) hit a turnaround 15-foot jump shot to give his team a hard fought 41-38 victory against the Ironworkers squad.

In the first half, it was all Ironworkers, as Sean Provenzano (21 points-1 trey-3 steals-3 assists) was sensational as he led his team to a 22-12 advantage at the break. Forward Robert Orton (12 points-2 treys) also hit some key shots during this run.

But in the second half, momentum shifted to the other bench. Trailing by double-digits at the beginning of the final 16 minutes of the season, the O’Brien’s Club went on a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to 3, 24-21.

Then, with 7:19 left to play, Coach Scot Bothwell’s team took their first lead of the game, 28-26. O’Brien’s Club star guard Provenzano answered with a steal and a layup, as well as a three-pointer from the top of the key the next time down the court. Now down by four, Brian DiFrancisco (11 points), Chris Banks (7 points), and Mitchell Newcomb (7 points), woke up from their slumber and kept their team in the game. With the clock ticking down and the teams tied 38-38, it looked as if this game was destined to go into overtime. But then, with only five seconds left on the game clock, “Mighty Joe” swished a turnaround jumper to seal the victory.
