South Boston Citizens’ Association President, Michael P. Bare reminds that the Evacuation Day Events have begun. After a very successful Kickoff Breakfast at the Cornerstone Restaurant on Saturday, Bare stated, “It is hard to believe that that we are here already, it sort of snuck up on us, but somehow we are ready for a wonderful three weeks of events.” At the breakfast event Bare read the official schedule, while simultaneously announcing and thanking this year’s chairs.
Bare noted a particular thank you and appreciation for the chairpersons that volunteer year after year without hesitation. “The chairpersons for the Basketball Free-Throw Event, Francis Adams, Susan Butler, Kathy Davis, Cindy Bell, Brian Nee, Nick Zaferakis, all have been volunteering their time for many years, we could not manage the tasks of organizing each event successfully without the help of these people. The Executive Board plans and macro-manages the events as a whole, but the work in the trenches is performed year after year, by community activists and people that just plain care. Without the foot soldiers of this organization, I am not sure whether we would have been around these 126 years.”
The Basketball Free-Throw Contest will be held on Monday, March 6th at 6:30 pm, at the Tynan Community Center. Trophies will be handed out at the event. Athony Gilardi is the 2006 Honorary Chairman of the Event.
The Swimming Competition will be held Tuesday, March 7th, at the Boys & Girls Club Pool, at 6:30 PM. The event this year is chaired by Mark Arluaskas, and Harry Duvall, with Joe Rull from Massport, as Honorary Chairman. Trophies will be handed out the evening of the event.
Bare urged all South Boston residents to try and attend the SBCA sports events to cheer on South Boston's budding sports talents. For more information, check this publication; watch the SBCA’s weekly talk show, Citizens’ Corner on BNN Live TV Channel 9, or go to: www.southbostoncitizens.org
