On Sunday, June 11, the 2006 Mayor’s Cup Roller Hockey Championships were held at Garvey Park in Dorchester.
Yes, the sun indeed finally showed itself to Bostonians which allowed City of Boston Recreation Department staff, after four postponements, to finally crown this year’s champs. Teams from Southie, girls and boys, competed in all of the age brackets and had a great time.
Paul Stewart, a former NHL official, came by the park to present the city’s recreation department with a check for $7,500 in support of this highly-regarded city endeavor. The donation was from the Bruins Foundation and the Bill Stewart Foundation.
Recreation Department Deputy Director David Burnes was also present and happy to see the kids busy and the public-private partnership alive and well
“On behalf of Mayor Thomas Menino, I would like to thank Paul Stewart, as well as the Bill Stewart and the Bruins Foundations for their generosity,” said Burnes. “It’s important to keep the kids involved and this can be done with this help, and truly shows how important these public-private partnerships are to everyone.”
