Letter to the editor: Bring back elected school committee members

Lately, all that we are hearing about are racial issues inside Boston Latin and all we see on the TV news is Boston City Councilor Tito Jackson, who chairs the City Council’s Education Committee. Back in the day, before they eliminated the elected school committee, issues such as this current one would have been dealt with by members of the elected school board. Parents would have applied pressure and the elected members would have held court. Parents back then had a voice, either on the original five-member citywide committee or the 13-member district/citywide committee. Today, Boston has a mayoral appointed Boston school committee. I see them on BNN-TV all the time, but when it comes to issues such as the ones at Boston Latin, it [...]

Letter to the editor: Parade was a success

This year’s St. Patrick’s Day parade was great. Thanks to everyone who made it all possible. The issue of the length of the parade is indeed yesterday’s news, as Boston’s Mayor Marty Walsh wisely put it. A big thank you goes out to Southie’s BFF (attorney) Chester Darling. There were few arrests and mostly it was a great day for families, young children and everyone else in between to enjoy some Southie Pride. As far as the temps, near 29 degrees, just another typical parade day in South Boston. I must say I missed the sight [...]

As someone who worked in the mental health field for almost 41 years and as a police officer for the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health for 27.5 of those years, I see the ongoing overdose crisis as indeed a crisis. The latest in a series of pieces in the South Boston Online: You are right, it is much more than an issue, it is an epidemic or plague and it is killing too many of our folks, especially young people. I have written on this situation several times recently in my weekly commentary in the Charlestown Patriot-Bridge. We can't wish it away or say it is a problem for someone else not us. Sadly, by now this drug issue has impacted so many folks, so [...]

Letter to the editor: “I pledge allegiance…”

South Boston Online, in its Dec. 3, 2015, issue (Page 8), photographed and published the image of a tattered and filthy American flag located atop a steel crossbar on an abandoned site at B Street and West Broadway. Following a week of inaction on everyone’s part, I began an unsuccessful quest to find someone in the area working with a ladder, whose use I could recruit. I once again visited the tattered flag’s location and happily, I discovered a pickup truck (with ladder) parked next to the site. I then tracked down the pickup’s owner. After explaining my quest, he and his partner took on the task and lowered the flag with respect. The three of us ceremonially folded the flag, later to be brought [...]
