Recently, Representative David Biele skated in the 4th Annual Heroes vs. Legislators charity hockey game to benefit the Skate for the 22 Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides support services to over 375 veterans and their families across Massachusetts. Founded in 2015 by a group of veterans, the Foundation gets its name from a staggering mental health statistic—military and veteran agencies estimate that an estimated twenty-two veterans take their lives each day.   In response to those numbers, the Foundation was created with three core goals: create a supportive, team environment for veterans through camaraderie and the sport of hockey at no cost; raise public awareness and provide prevention services to help veterans who may be struggling; and provide financial assistance to families of veterans [...]

Life Turns on a Dime

By Brianne R.  Fitzgerald RN, MSN, NP, MPH Winter in Boston is long and dark.  The Redline breaks down, folks complain about the weather and we make do.  This winter I was part of the huddling hoards on the platform at Andrew trying to get home at night.  I was a regular at Dunkin Donuts (ooops cross out donuts) in Andrew Square,  I trudged Methadone Mile to see patients at the detox on Mass Ave, wandered by the empty lot at Old Colony and Dorchester Street on my way to my job at Gavin Foundation and tried to remain grounded with regular yoga at a Bikram studio.  I practiced gratitude; I had several great jobs and my health.  I was tired and attributed this to [...]

Nurture Your Neighbor – Nominate a Mom for a Free Ultimate Mind / Body Makeover

2019-04-28T12:11:34-04:00April 28th, 2019|Categories: Featured, Lifestyle|Comments Off on Nurture Your Neighbor – Nominate a Mom for a Free Ultimate Mind / Body Makeover

By Tara Kerrigan Hayes While the complicated origins of Mother’s Day attributes a woman named Anna Jarvis to founding the holiday, it was actually her own mother, Ann Jarvis, who had a slightly different idea for the holiday’s intent. Rather than simply celebrating one mother in particular, (our own), she envisioned a community service day for mothers to help other mothers in need. It is in that same spirit that NURTURE YOUR NEIGHBOR was created. Though previous Mother’s Day Make-over Contests held by Nurture Salon and Spa focused mainly on aesthetics, this year, owner, Susan Devlin (who is known for her charity work), is partnering with several local businesses in a display of community love, to award one special mom with an ultimate make-over to [...]

224 Boston Street – The New Brunch Hot Spot

2019-04-27T12:35:19-04:00April 27th, 2019|Categories: Business, Featured, News|Comments Off on 224 Boston Street – The New Brunch Hot Spot

By: Tara Kerrigan Hayes   If you’re looking for a new favorite brunch spot, it’s time to take a fresh look at the old 224 Boston Street. While the name hasn’t changed, the proprietors have, along with the menu, look and energy. The vision for 224 by new owner, Eric Aulenback, is simple - preservation with subtle innovation. “224 had been a beloved Dorchester neighborhood dining institution for 30 years”, says Eric. “It was featured in the Boston Globe as one of a handful of Boston Restaurants that have stood the test of time, considering Chef Barbara Lynch’s debut on the Boston culinary scene began right here at 224. The place had such a rich history to celebrate and honor, that I vowed to retain name [...]

Mul’s Diner Has Always Served Breakfast Over Easy

2019-04-25T07:24:40-04:00April 25th, 2019|Categories: Featured, News|Comments Off on Mul’s Diner Has Always Served Breakfast Over Easy

Submitted by Ray Flynn Former Mayor of Boston and lifelong resident of South Boston Men and women on their way to work, union members, MBTA employees and politicians always found Mul’s a comfortable spot to meet and have breakfast or lunch. It opens at 5 a.m. and closes just after noon.  The food was great and the price was right.  Now this working-class restaurant located in the Lower End of South Boston could be next to fall victim to development. Joe Mulrey, the original owner, built the popular diner and worked hard at it, along with his wife. Everybody liked and trusted both.  My family and the Mulrey’s not only grew up in the Lower End of Southie, but we also attended the same schools, [...]

Stop & Shop Workers Rally at South Bay with Support from Former Vice President Joe Biden      The work stoppage at Stop & Shop began just over a week ago.  The stoppage is a strike that was called late last Wednesday (effective Thursday morning, the 11th) by the voting members and the officials of United Food & Commercial Workers Union (the UFCW).   It is a large strike action, perhaps the largest such strike in this century, at least in New England.  The number on strike is over 30,000; Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island are affected. Today, Stop & Shop at South Bay held a rally and in attendance was Former Vice President Joe Biden and Mayor Marty Walsh.

The Eighth Sorrow

2019-04-18T10:37:09-04:00April 18th, 2019|Categories: Featured, News|Comments Off on The Eighth Sorrow

By Rick Winterson   The Virgin Mary is often referred to as “Our Lady of Sorrows”.  Beginning with the Prophecy of Simeon, and ending with the Burial of her Son Jesus Christ, Mary (or Miriam, if you prefer) suffered Seven Sorrows.  Four of these intense Sorrows were directly connected with the First Easter weekend – Jesus carrying the burden of the Cross, His Crucifixion and Death, the removal of His body from the Cross, and His burial – all of which took place on the first Good Friday. And now there is an Eighth Sorrow for the Virgin Mary to bear at Eastertime. It’s the loss by fire of her Cathedral in France – the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris.  Notre Dame might be [...]

By: Tara Kerrigan Hayes (Photo by Julie Ryan Photography) A special fundraising event was held on Tuesday, April 2, at Capo Restaurant’s Supper Club on West Broadway. Fittingly called Neighborhood Night at Capo, neighbors and loved ones showed up by the hundreds in a remarkable turnout to support Colin’s Joy Project, and to pay tribute to an inspiring family aiming to transform their grief into a legacy of joy and giving. After the tragic death of their son, Colin, (just shy of his third birthday), parents  Kerri and Brendan McGrath initiated Colin’s Joy Project, an organization dedicated to building and enhancing play spaces as well as sponsoring children and family programming in the community, particularly for families in need. Colin’s Joy Project has grown both rapidly [...]
