In December 1983, South Boston native Dan Lynch woke up in his South Boston apartment sick and tired of being sick and tired. Today, he's the person people turn to when them or their loved ones, need help from the ferocious grip of addiction. On March 1, at Boston College High School, Lynch will receive the Paraclete's founders award, given annually to individuals who are dedicated to improving the lives of others. Previous recipients include Boston Police Commissioner William Evans and the late Paul McDevitt, founder of Modern Assistance Programs. World War I Centennial Approaches: April, 2017

2017-02-23T10:24:07-05:00February 23rd, 2017|Categories: News|Comments Off on World War I Centennial Approaches: April, 2017

by Rick Winterson The World War I Commemoration Committee has completed its third meeting at the Fitzgerald VFW Post. Many plans and events are underway. The first such event at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 29, will commemorate the Fallen Heroes of World War I. It will be held at South Boston High School. Were you aware there is a large pictorial memorial of South Boston’s World War I Fallen Heroes – 101 of those brave soldiers, who were killed in action before World War I ended on Armistice Day in 1918?? The memorial is located in the hall outside of the South Boston High School auditorium. One hundred years ago, in April of 1917, President Woodrow Wilson asked Congress for permission to declare war [...]

“Annie” Is Terrific

2017-02-04T11:43:10-05:00February 4th, 2017|Categories: Lifestyle|Comments Off on “Annie” Is Terrific

By Rick Winterson “Terrific” is a simple, a frequently overused, and almost a kind of slang word, but South Boston Online can’t think of a better term for the recent production of the musical “Annie” at the Boys & Girls Club. The young people – all Clubhouse members – had worked extremely hard to perfect their performances. Special credit is also due to the many, many Directors, Creative Team Members, and all of those behind the scenes. The Club’s presentation of “Annie” was actually a Review (“Revue”?), meaning that the production featured the most dramatic and well-known excerpts from the original, full-length musical “Annie” – e.g., “Maybe” and “Tomorrow”. The Clubhouse production, consisting of 12 total numbers, was approximately an hour long (it flew by!). [...]

Chinese New Year Starts in Andrew Square

2017-02-03T10:22:23-05:00February 3rd, 2017|Categories: Lifestyle|Comments Off on Chinese New Year Starts in Andrew Square

The Chinese New Year of the Rooster started in Andrew Square with a spectacular dragon sighting. The New Year is an annual Far Eastern celebration set by a Lunar Calendar. It began here in Boston on Friday, January 27-28, as dated by our own Gregorian Calendar. Late last Friday afternoon, Andrew Square’s Anna Travel (corner of Devine Way and Dorchester Avenue) was visited by two huge dragons, an impeccably dressed Chinese gentleman (with fan), and a trio of drum-and-cymbal percussionists (with, well, drums and cymbals). Unlike the episodes in the dragon stories of the Western World (such as Smaug in Tolkien’s “The Hobbit”?), a dragon sighting brings good health and fortune to many Eastern nations. The Chinese Lunar New Year and its hopes are symbolized [...]

Boston Bound GE and Celtics Join Forces

2017-02-02T11:01:30-05:00February 2nd, 2017|Categories: Sports|Comments Off on Boston Bound GE and Celtics Join Forces

by Rick Winterson      As you know, General Electric (GE) has opted to relocate its head office from Connecticut to South Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood.  GE has submitted preliminary designs for their new headquarters building on Fort Point Channel, and they’ve begun relocating key personnel to their temporary headquarters on Farnsworth Street.    Last spring, the Board of Directors of the National Basketball Association (the NBA) approved the use of corporate logos on the uniforms of any NBA teams that choose to do so.  The Celtics announced their desire to join forces with a reputable corporation for this purpose, preferably a corporation with strong, identifiable ties to the City of Boston.  They began to search for such a partner.    Last Wednesday, January 25, [...]

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf? Not the Lyric Stage!

2017-01-26T15:32:03-05:00January 26th, 2017|Categories: Lifestyle|Comments Off on Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf? Not the Lyric Stage!

By Richard Campbell For many Americans their primary experience with this classic play is the 1966 Mike Nichols directed film version starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. With the passing of Edward Albee this past fall, the Lyric’s Artistic Director, Spiro Veloudos’ decision to entreat director Scott Edmiston to stage this landmark renewal is certainly timely. Staged with masterful fluidity by Edmiston in a way that conjures up vivid stage pictures this production elevates the story with remarkable economy, not normally associated with this pugilistic late night drinking saga. A great deal of the light revealed in this production should be attributed to Paula Plum’s heroic, fresh interpretation of Martha- a college professors’ wife whose emotional roller coaster sets a standard for ribald humor, jovial [...]
