By: Tara Kerrigan Hayes If you’re looking for a new favorite brunch spot, it’s time to take a fresh look at the old 224 Boston Street. While the name hasn’t changed, the proprietors have, along with the menu, look and energy. The vision for 224 by new owner, Eric Aulenback, is simple - preservation with subtle innovation. “224 had been a beloved Dorchester neighborhood dining institution for 30 years”, says Eric. “It was featured in the Boston Globe as one of a handful of Boston Restaurants that have stood the test of time, considering Chef Barbara Lynch’s debut on the Boston culinary scene began right here at 224. The place had such a rich history to celebrate and honor, that I vowed to retain name [...]
On Thursday, March 28, 500 corporate and civic leaders, elected officials, community partners, and Save the Harbor/Save the Bay supporters gathered at the Seaport Hotel for Destination Boston Harbor, Save the Harbor's annual fundraising gala. This event celebrated a year of on-the-water programming that connects millions of the region's residents and visitors to Boston Harbor, the Harbor Islands, the region's public beaches, and waterfront communities, and reflected on the investments and improvements in access to clean water for all. Each year, Save the Harbor recognizes men and women as Boston Harbor Heroes for their commitment to Save the Harbor's mission, the community, and the Harbor. Save the Harbor's Board Chair and National Grid’s Vice President of Government Affairs for Massachusetts, Joseph Newman, along with Save [...]

By Tara Kerrigan Hayes When you enter Fox & The Knife you’re immediately hit with sheer, exuberant, energy. Described as an Italian inspired Enoteca, this neighborhood joint is bursting with personality, with an Amy Winehouse meets Julia Child sort of vibe. From the buzz of the crowd, to the intoxicating aromas, the character of the décor, and the thoughtfully chosen tunes, there’s a pure celebration of the senses, before even sitting down to taste. With no major structural renovations necessary, the redesign yields a sleek and cozy, yet edgy space, with one particular improvement that the Maiden lay-out had been screaming for; a six-seat chef’s table providing a full view of the open kitchen design, for diners to watch Chef Karen Akunowicz wield her [...]

By Richard Campbell Perhaps the surest sign of the coming rehabilitation of the neighborhood surrounding Old Colony is the plan for a new five story residential building with retail space on the site of Bell’s Market. The project designers Stefanov Architects have teamed up with developer Rashide, LLC, to put together a comprehensive proposal to the Boston Development Planning Association (BDPA). The proposal submitted in late 2017 is for new five-story 32 new residential rental apartments that are primarily market rate, with 5 affordable units and will include 23 below level parking spaces. It will have about 7,000 sq. feet of retail space- which will include a new Bell’s Market, on the 9th street side and a café on the 8th street side. Other amenities [...]
By: Tara Kerrigan Hayes We all aspire to live our lives in a meaningful way, but anyone who knows Susan Devlin, knows she sets the bar. Having always been fiercely determined and inherently altruistic, Susan had two dreams as a little girl; to one day own her own business and ultimately, to help people. The fusion of those two dreams began with her fervent personal philosophy: that every person is beautiful and deserves to feel as such. That passion for nurturing self-confidence in others led Susan to the salon industry where she honed her skills for many years, until in 2007, realizing one of her childhood dreams, she opened her own business, appropriately named Nurture Salon and Spa. Susan has now been using her platform [...]
by Rick Winterson Thursday morning was a busy, bustling day in South Boston’s prime industrial area, its Marine Industrial Park, now entitled the Raymond L. Flynn Marine Park. Promptly at 11 a.m., Flynn Marine Park became even busier. J.C. Cannistraro LLC, a two-generation, family-owned firm engaged in mechanical contracting, formally and officially opened the doors to “The FID”. “The FID” is a highly evocative name that Cannistraro gave to the BPDA-owned building they now occupy at 25 Fid Kennedy Avenue. Thomas “FID” Kennedy was a longshoreman; he was also an uncle of John F. Kennedy – think “Uncle TFK and Nephew JFK”. A fid is actually a marine hand tool-of-the-trade used for splicing rope. It resembles a piece of thin, tapered, sharpened doweling. [...]
