By Ginger DeShaney “Be the person you needed when you were younger.”  That’s Allison Baker’s favorite saying. “I try to live that quote,” she said. And she is succeeding … big time. Allison is a lifelong Southie fixture who works tirelessly for the neighborhood’s children through the Edgerley Family South Boston Boys & Girls Club, local community centers, the CYO basketball program, and her nonprofit organization Kickoff for Kids. When she was younger, Allison had the people she needed: Katie O’Connell, Barbara Kelly, Joe Kelly, Kathy Davis, Kevin Lally, John Lydon, Sean Monahan, Ronald “Cheech” Maciejewski, and so many others. “All these people still do youth work,” Allison said. “Those people have been role models to me.” Allison spent much of her youth at all [...]

The true spirit of Southie was on full display at the Peace Picnic Wednesday. The Monica's Kitchen event at St. Monica's brought neighbors together to share a meal and build community. It was all about eating together and being together. Monica's Kitchen provides food support for the neighborhood year-round. In addition, every month the Kitchen holds Peace Breakfasts (winter), Peace and Pasta Spaghetti Dinners, and Peace Picnics (summer) where "individuals and families ... gather with us for community meals where peace and goodwill are shared and seeds of neighborly friendship and concern are sown," according to one of the church's bulletins. On Wednesday, burgers, hot dogs, salads, chips, cookies, and watermelon were served to attendees. The Boston Police Department ice cream truck provided cold treats [...]

The 68-year-old Anne is currently the Arts Director and Summer Camp Director at the Edgerley Family South Boston Club but has held various titles throughout her tenure. “That’s one of the reasons I stayed so long is because I can change jobs around,” she said. “Being able to have something different to do … has been very rewarding.” As her retirement date nears, Anne acknowledges it doesn't feel [...]

South Boston Online sat down for a Zoom call with these four artists from the Edgerley Family South Boston Boys & Girls Club and the Club’s Arts Director, Anne Gordon. “They’ve really blossomed this year because they’ve been able to devote so much time to their art,” said Anne, who is retiring this summer. “They’ve really done some great work.” The three younger kids are in Anne’s [...]

By Ginger DeShaney Andrew Markarian is going from a graduating class of about 70 students at Boston Collegiate Charter School (BCCS) to Syracuse University, which boasts about 15,000 undergraduates. While he may experience a bit of culture shock in the fall, he’s hoping growing up in South Boston will help him adjust to a big school. “South Boston isn’t that big, but it still has a huge community, and I feel the same with Syracuse,” said the son of Debbie and Thomas Markarian of South Boston. “I know it’s a large school but I feel like there still could be small communities all around. That’s the same with South Boston. It’s not that large but there are a bunch of things you can do and [...]
