by Rick Winterson      The neighborhood of South Boston wears many guises.  Not the least it is a place of beauty, and when called for, it’s a place of protest as well.  Both of these particular roles were reflected last weekend in two recent fine art exhibits. One exhibit at the Medicine Wheel’s Spoke Gallery (110 K Street, second floor), another at The Distillery Gallery (216 East Second Street, lower level).    Medicine Wheel’s Spoke Gallery is the site of a striking exhibition of eight large works by John Provenzano, who has his own studio in South Boston’s King Terminal.  John’s medium is acrylic on canvas; the dimensions of his painting generally exceed six feet.  His creations are brilliantly colorful semi-abstractions, which also contain [...]

They are having fun this summer as members of the Harry McDonough Sailing program which is located on Castle Island. They’re learning how to sail and are happily cooling off in the ocean waters of the Lagoon. They’re enjoying themselves but also have to behave responsibly and listen attentively to the program supervisors (whom they all like) when they explain water-safety precautions. The three boys enjoying life at Castle Island sailing and splashing around are, Jackie Murphy, Mike Whalen, and Corey Legere. Jackie Murphy, 12, is the son of Maurice and Jean Murphy. He has three sister sisters, Emma, Ally, and Ciara. He loves his family pets, a cat named Arthur and a dog named Max. Jackie will be in the sixth grade this September [...]

Still a Major Port

2016-07-14T12:26:49-04:00July 14th, 2016|Categories: Featured, Lifestyle|Tags: |Comments Off on Still a Major Port

Watching a fully-loaded PANAMAX container ship, just as it comes around the bend of the Castle Island walkway to the McCorkle Pier, is certainly impressive – like encountering Leviathan.  As the full length of the ship appears, you get a look at how truly big (!) these container craft really are. But that’s not the end of the story.  The ship shown in the photos, called a “PANAMAX”, was the widest that could pass through the Panama Canal until this year.  The project to widen the Panama Canal has been finished so container ships twice that size can now come up the East Coast.  Watch for them. A Wildflower Field Trip

2016-07-14T12:25:04-04:00July 14th, 2016|Categories: Featured, Happenings, Lifestyle|Tags: |Comments Off on A Wildflower Field Trip

This spring, on Thursday evening, May 5, George LoCascio III gave the 36th Annual Marjorie Gibbons Lecture in the Public Room of the South Boston Branch Library.  It was a great success, as George described his search for wildflowers located within the urban perimeter of South Boston.  He had spotted and identified 75 distinct species. Now, George is dedicated to his profession, and he likes to spread the word, so he voluntarily arranged a follow-up field trip to Castle Island, where many of our local wildflowers are found.  A group of ten hardy (and hearty) searchers gathered last Saturday afternoon, July 9, to carry out their own search, guided by George.  He had a handout and his reference book with him:  “Newcomb’s Wildflower Guide”, 1977, [...]

Boston Fireworks

Flags flew everywhere over South Boston all day long and into the evening on Monday, the Fourth of July – from the crane on the Reserved Channel to Old Glory on Dorchester Heights as the Esplanade fireworks began.  It was a stirring sight from the Heights, the City of Boston’s highest natural point.  The fireworks followed the Pops Concert’s “1812 Overture”, when all of Boston’s church bells are rung.

On the Fourth of July we celebrate our Freedom. We celebrate Democracy. Liberty and Democracy is indeed precious to all Americans. We must never forget how lucky we really are as we ponder the fate of other people in distant lands. We are fortunate that we live in this great country. We reflect and give thanks for our blessed condition in life. We salute our Founding Fathers and commend their wisdom which established the greatest constitutional form of government in the world. For all that and much more, we must never forget or let this Union fall by the wayside. Here are some quotes for you to read as you enjoy the Fourth of July: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all [...]

Celebrating the Fourth of July

2016-06-29T15:38:06-04:00June 29th, 2016|Categories: Featured, Lifestyle|Comments Off on Celebrating the Fourth of July

On the Fourth of July we celebrate the birth of our nation, a democratic nation dedicated to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. We celebrate the birth of a nation of the people, by the people, and for the people, dedicated to serving the people and not the state. We celebrate Freedom. On this holiday during the last few years, I have reflected upon how fortunate we are. This year will be no exception because tyranny did not die when the American rebels successfully repelled England. We take for granted many simple activities because we have had our freedom to do so. We assume and declare Freedom as an unalienable right, but this is not the case elsewhere. Millions of people throughout the world [...]
