By Ginger DeShaney The Sept. 1 lease cycle puts a lot of pressure on our neighborhood – from clogged traffic and mounds and mounds of trash, to long lines at local businesses. But because the move-out (Aug. 31) and move-in dates fall midweek, we may have gotten a bit of a reprieve this year.  Jackie Rooney, broker/owner of Rooney Real Estate in South Boston, said some tenants couldn’t take time off during the week, so they were able to move out last weekend. “That works a little bit better in the sense that the move-out, the move-in are not all concentrated on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. It’s a little more gradual this year.” Historically, the Sept. 1 cycle was put in place in areas [...]

For your information, South Boston is the home of a special and unique organization.  The founder of this organization is a local resident, George Benner.  George established it more than a dozen years ago in 2008, and he named it the “Round Table”.  If you think you remember that the first Round Table was part of the stories about King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, you are absolutely correct. In George’s case, South Boston’s Round Table is devoted to gardening – yes, gardening.  The Round Table’s gardens are located in and around the Mary Ellen McCormack Project, between Old Colony/Columbia and Dorchester Avenue.  These gardens have one, single purpose:  the harvesting of nourishing vegetables that are available for free to residents of [...]

2022-08-03T08:58:30-04:00August 3rd, 2022|Categories: Featured, Lifestyle|Comments Off on Voices in Healthcare: Peter Agostinos

South Boston resident and vascular surgeon, Peter Agostinos, 55, has a saying that he applies to many life situations, and it is “we will figure it out.” It   conveys an optimism that makes complex problems seem manageable and distinguishes solid intellect alone from an ability to deal with the unexpected. From the University of Buffalo Medical School to the Cleveland Clinic to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital and Blue Cross/Blue Shield, this physician and father of four was working at the Carney Hospital when that familiar institution serving Boston neighborhoods for generations, entered a new iteration as it became the COVID treatment facility for much of the Steward Healthcare System. Peter Agostinos liked what the hospital stood for and worked their part -time in pre-Covid days. [...]

By Ginger DeShaney For Brian Castellucci, “Fitness is not a destination. It's a way of life.” So when he was let go during the pandemic from the gym he worked at for a dozen years, the personal trainer found a way to rebuild himself and build his own fitness business.  “I kind of got forced into a situation,” said Brian, 34, owner of BCFitness. But he has made the best of it. ”I did a lot of virtual stuff at first. I contacted every client I've ever been with,” he said, noting he was able to reconnect with people and was training clients as far away as England. “So it was kind of cool.” When restrictions lifted a bit and he could work with clients [...]

By Ginger DeShaney “All gardening is landscape painting.”  – Alexander Pope This rings true at Virginia Kropas’ Hardy Street house. Virginia is an artist and her garden is her palette of color, shape, and texture … and her serenity.  “I can shut out most of the sounds,” she said. “It’s very peaceful. I can rest my eyes on green stuff.” Virginia gets a great view of the back yard from her second-floor deck, where her cat, Abigail, likes to hang out, too.  “I come out when I get up,” Virginia said, noting she may be in the garden working, or looking at it, for up to two hours in the morning. “I may just be staring and contemplating.” She also comes out in the evening. By Ginger DeShaney MaryAnne Miller’s backyard garden oasis on I Street is a haven for bees.  “Bees are our friends,” she said. “I love bees.” MaryAnne has myriad pollinator-friendly plants to attract the bees.  “I understand these are our friends that are too busy working to bother you. So you need to keep the bees going. “I’m obsessed with bees.” MaryAnne combines plants that she knows the bees like and that she likes as well, such as sage, salvia, dill, calendula, mini sunflowers, wildflowers, dahlias, lobelia, and Dusty Millers (in honor of her last name). “I've had many, many bumblebees, which makes me so happy,” said MaryAnne, who has lived in her I Street house for 45 years. Boston Garden: Kathy Provenzano’s Instincts Create Beautiful Front Yard

By Ginger DeShaney Kathy Provenzano says she’s no expert when it comes to gardening, but anyone walking by 105-107 Marine Road would beg to differ.  The front yard is an explosion of yellow with some pink and purple. It’s just gorgeous.  There are also garden embellishments such as a lighthouse, bird bath, and rock sculptures.  “I enjoy [gardening],” Kathy said. “I wish I knew more about it. It is what it is, I enjoy what I have.” And so does the neighborhood. Kathy doesn’t remember all the things she’s planted from way back when, but the evening primrose came from her friend’s husband’s mother and Kathy spread them around. “I’m just playing around out here,” said Kathy, who lives in a house owned by her [...]
