By Kevin Devlin At the beginning of the summer (“Yeah I’ve got a gripe June 23”) SBOL wrote about the danger to pedestrians when crossing the street at the intersection of East Broadway and K Street. This intersection has a high amount of foot traffic and drivers need to be aware of this because sometimes they drive too fast without regard for pedestrians. On more than one occasion, I have witnessed drivers drive recklessly through this intersection as pedestrians were walking across the street and within the crosswalks. About a fortnight ago, the Boston Transportation Department (BTD) installed pedestrian signage at this intersection to remind drivers to stop when they see pedestrians crossing the street. The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) today announced the recipient of the annual scholarship honoring the memory of Tommy Butler, the long-time Massport Director of Government and Community Affairs and son of South Boston. The $5,000 Thomas J. Butler Memorial Scholarship was awarded to South Boston resident Matthew McDonnell.   The Thomas J. Butler Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a student who resides in South Boston, is graduating from high school and has been accepted to an accredited college or university. McDonnell is a graduate of BC High, volunteers his time with the Curley Rec Center, and was a member of BC High hockey team since his freshman year. They are happy, polite, young girls who are having a blast this summer spending quality time at the Joseph M. Tierney Learning Center (TLC), which is located on Mercer Street in South Boston, adjacent to the Old Colony Housing Development. They enjoy going to arts and crafts, the computer room, playing across the street in Moakley Park or swimming at Carson Beach. They love being engaged in a variety of activities on a daily basis and like the Tierney staff because they’re nice, caring, and thoughtful.
