Hoop action was fast and furious at the Walsh Center gym this past weekend in the Gate of Heaven CYO cadet house league program.

In the opening tilt, Cam Lapaglia (aka the Cash Man) hit a three-pointer from the wing to lead his team to a 34-31 win against the Representative Collins Club. Cam netted 12 points, including two treys, while Joey Maiullari scored nine points and Jake Harrison contributed five points. For the Collins Club, big man Walter Steele scored 17 points while Marc Iannaco had 10 points.

In the second game, Excitement sat in the balcony watching, as the Jack McDonough Club eked out a hard fought victory against the previously undefeated Metro Energy Club. With time running out, Zack Mitchell grabbed a rebound, dribbled into the corner and threw up a 10-foot jumper that bounced on the rim, up in the air, and then into the net as time expired. Zack’s squad won the game by two points.

The coaches in the cadet house league are Billy Crowley, Kevin Cox, Bobby McGarrell, Walter Steele, Ralph Mazzeo, and Michael Donovan. They’re doing a great job every week and deserve recognition. And, a hearty shout-out to Katie “The Geico Girl” O’Connell who is an avid Gatey CYO hoop fan.

Zack Mitchell was on the attack when he scored as the buzzer sounded to lift his team to a two-point victory.
