On Sunday, Feb. 21, at the Walsh Center gym, the Metro Energy Club defeated the Jack McDonough Club, 29-22, to capture the Gate of Heaven CYO cadet house league title. The Metro Energy Club was the regular season champion with an 11-1 record and was not to be denied in the championship tilt.

In the first half, Metro Energy Club guard Logan Crowley hit a three-pointer from the corner to give his team an 11-6 lead at intermission. In the opening minutes of the second half, the Jack McDonough Club went on a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to one, 12-11. But then coach Billy Crowley’s boys buckled down and went on a 6-0 run of their own to realize an 18-11 advantage. The Jack McDonough Club continued to scratch and claw, but a couple of crucial turnovers and too many missed free throws hampered the team’s drive to unseat the regular season champions.

For the McDonough Club, Zack Mitchell scored nine points, including two three-pointers while Joey Brink scored six points. For Metro Energy, SBOL’S MVP, Logan Crowley, was in the zone, as he netted 18 points, including three three-pointers.

Crowley was happy that his squad finished in strong fashion and won the championship.

“It’s all about teamwork,” Crowley said. “All year long this team has been very unselfish. They would rather pass the ball than shoot it. They are all about the team game and deserve this championship.”
