Local Players Enjoying Another Season Of Baseball

The South Boston Babe Ruth League is in full swing as the boys of summer have taken to the mound. The 2016 summer edition features three house league teams from South Boston, two South Boston travel teams, and two house league teams from Savin Hill. The two travel squads play teams from the South Shore. All home games are played at the McConnell Park in Savin Hill and at Salmanowich Field, which is located within South Boston’s Moakley Park.
The three sponsors for the South Boston house league teams are the East Boston Savings Bank, Boston Home Inspectors, and the third is in memory of the late John Hart. The two South Boston travel teams are sponsored by the Gate of Heaven CYO program and Massport. The two sponsors for the Savin Hill house league teams are the Harp and Bard and Metro South Insurance.
The longtime president of the South Boston Babe Ruth League is well-known resident, coach, sport’s official, league organizer, and community activist, Kevin Lally. This is the league’s sixtieth season and Lally has been the league president for the past forty years. His philosophy is simple; keeping youngsters busy in a productive manner by having managers teach the players the fundamentals of the sport and how to win or lose with grace.
“We concentrate on improving their fundamental knowledge of baseball by working on their basic skills,” Lally said. “And along with that we place an emphasis on good sportsmanship which is always one of our main objectives.”
