The 15th Annual Boston Marine Corps Honor Run will be held Saturday, May 7, in honor of Marine Sgt. Daniel Vasselian of Abington, Mass. More than 1,500 people - including active-duty military, veterans from all branches of armed services, and local law enforcement groups - will gather at South Boston’s Carson Beach to run in honor of Sergeant Vasselian, who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2013. This popular 5K road race, produced by Boston-based Conventures, Inc., is held to raise awareness for the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. Sgt. Daniel Vasselian was killed in action on Dec. 23, 2013 during Operation Enduring Freedom while assigned to 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Signs of the real spring in South Boston

2016-04-27T14:08:56-04:00April 27th, 2016|Categories: News|Tags: |Comments Off on Signs of the real spring in South Boston

By RICK WINTERSON The arrival of spring in South Boston is definitely spun out gradually (and graphically) by the northerly path of the sun, as sunsets become more or less centered upon Broadway for a couple of weeks. And with our main thoroughfares pointing west, accompanied by views from Dorchester Heights, the spring sunsets here are definitely worth a look. A long look. (Just don’t stare; it’s bad for your eyes. Use a polarizing filter, or glance at the setting sun quickly and only occasionally.) These sunsets happen in mid-April, almost a month after the vernal (spring) equinox on or around March 21. Perhaps they are rewards for what we did 240 years ago on that fateful Wednesday morning, April 19, 1775 - the first [...]

2016-04-27T14:08:43-04:00April 27th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Tags: |Comments Off on OWLL performs staged reading at Franklin Park Zoo

By RICK WINTERSON On With Living and Learning (OWLL) brings together underrepresented women and girls with teaching artists and human service professionals. Leadership workshops result in theater performances that focus on social justice issues. These serve as passageways to transforming and developing a community’s future. Mary Driscoll, the founder of On With Living and Learning. (Photo by Rick Winterson) OWLL was founded by Fort Point’s Mary Driscoll. A recent performance of “Humanity not Statistics”, written by Mary and directed by Tasia O. Jones, took place in a novel site – the Tropical Forest Pavilion at the Franklin Park Zoo. This was a staged reading, in collaboration with Sisterhood on the Move and Samuel Hurtado of South Boston en Accion, in memory of Marvin [...]

Community members gather to learn about proposed Starbucks

2016-04-27T14:08:23-04:00April 27th, 2016|Categories: News|Tags: |Comments Off on Community members gather to learn about proposed Starbucks

The crowd outside of 749 East Broadway (northwest corner of its intersection with L Street) early Monday evening was awaiting a meeting with the owner of a proposed new Starbucks at that location. Four Starbucks are located in South Boston now: three on the Waterfront and one at 11 West Broadway by Broadway Station. Ten or more other coffee shops are already located a few blocks from the L and Broadway intersection. In general, those gathered were firmly against opening a Starbucks there, due to potential traffic problems, a lack of neighborhood notification, and no perceived need for yet another coffee shop. No license has been granted yet. That’ll tentatively take place in City Hall on the morning of May 4. -Rick Winterson

With some community support, Murphy’s Jewelry relocates

By SUSAN DOUCET For decades, Billy Cosetta has been helping members of the community. If a set of rosary beads needs repair, Cosetta, the owner of Murphy’s Jewelry, fixes them at no charge. This winter, when Cosetta found out he was being evicted from the East Broadway storefront where Murphy’s has long been located, the community rallied around the small business owner who has shown generosity. His daughters set up an online fundraising campaign to help finance his relocation. More than $15,000 was raised in two months. “I wouldn’t have been able to move without it,” Cosetta said of the community’s fundraising efforts. Murphy’s Jewelry is now in a new building on West First Street. The development – condos with commercial space on the ground [...]

Patriot’s Day honored at local schools with aid from historical society

2016-04-20T14:47:29-04:00April 20th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Tags: |Comments Off on Patriot’s Day honored at local schools with aid from historical society

By RICK WINTERSON You might well ask how we observe Patriots Day in South Boston. It is one of the most important historical dates in Boston’s history – the start of the American Revolution, Paul Revere’s ride, the Lexington Minutemen, and “the shot that was heard around the world” at the Old North Bridge in Concord. This year of 2016 saw the 120th running of the Boston Marathon – world famous and better than ever. The Red Sox played Monday morning (though they lost to the Blue Jays). Lexington, Concord, and all the minuteman towns had huge celebrations on Monday (except for Sudbury’s rock-ribbed traditionalists, who insist upon the actual date of April 19). The swan boats hit the water in the Public Garden for [...]

Springtime shoppers stroll along Broadway

2016-04-20T14:42:49-04:00April 20th, 2016|Categories: Business|Tags: |Comments Off on Springtime shoppers stroll along Broadway

By RICK WINTERSON The Spring Stroll has become another South Boston tradition. It is centered upon the merchants, enterprises and purveyors of refreshments along Broadway. But as you’ll recall, South Boston Online focused the lead article in our April 7 issue on residential developments along West Broadway. Well, the rapid development of shops and businesses along West Broadway is equally astonishing, so we are focusing on that in this issue. New businesses range from the South Boston Arts Association’s (the SBAA’s) charming new “Around the Corner” Gallery to a major opening last Thursday: the Fairway Independent Mortgage Corporation.  Check out their “core values” prominently displayed just inside their door. The SBAA Gallery is just around the corner from Neatly Nested, a design and furnishings shop [...]

By KEVIN DEVLIN Last Saturday, April 16, “Saturday Night Live” featured a fake drug commercial for non-drowsy “Heroin AM,” an option for people who want to use heroin and still get things done during the day. In the commercial, SNL guest host and actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus is portrayed as a school bus driver with a young boy and husband. She gets through the day pumped up on heroin. They mention in the commercial that the medicine is also available in gummy bears, along with “Cocaine PM.” Everything was a big joke. In a Facebook post, officials from the Dodge County Sheriff’s office in Wisconsin responded to the skit Sunday morning: “The lack of sensitivity for the families of those who have lost loved ones to [...]
