To the South Boston Community

After a year and a half of careful consideration, contemplation, and discussions, along with another year and a half of logistics and paperwork, I have sold our family funeral home (O’Brien Funeral Home) to John Reen of Brighton.  John owns and operates his family’s funeral home in Brighton.  He worked for Jack when he was here, and for me in South Boston for more than 20 years.     This was not an easy decision. Stepping away from the full-time operations of the O’Brien Funeral Home has been the most difficult decision I have ever had to make – both personally and professionally.  However, I continue to struggle with ongoing issues with my sight and overall well-being; my children need me to be more available. So, it [...]

Voices in Healthcare: Peter Agostinos

2022-08-03T08:58:30-04:00August 3rd, 2022|Categories: Featured, Lifestyle|Comments Off on Voices in Healthcare: Peter Agostinos

South Boston resident and vascular surgeon, Peter Agostinos, 55, has a saying that he applies to many life situations, and it is “we will figure it out.” It   conveys an optimism that makes complex problems seem manageable and distinguishes solid intellect alone from an ability to deal with the unexpected. From the University of Buffalo Medical School to the Cleveland Clinic to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital and Blue Cross/Blue Shield, this physician and father of four was working at the Carney Hospital when that familiar institution serving Boston neighborhoods for generations, entered a new iteration as it became the COVID treatment facility for much of the Steward Healthcare System. Peter Agostinos liked what the hospital stood for and worked their part -time in pre-Covid days. [...]

A Love of Food, and Gratitude

2022-07-30T09:53:35-04:00July 30th, 2022|Categories: Business, Featured|Comments Off on A Love of Food, and Gratitude

For Chef Erick Medrano, cooking has always been more than a career choice. It’s been an expression of love and gratitude, instilled in him since he was a young boy. Raised in Guatemala, Erick grew up watching his mother and grandmother cook in a wood fire arcilla (clay oven), filling the house with the sweet smell of fresh baked bread and unique family recipes. It would be those memories that would fuel his childhood dream of one day becoming a chef. Like countless others, Erick would venture to the U.S. with the hopes of a brighter future for himself and his family. Landing in Massachusetts, he would unwittingly a take a fateful stroll down a local street, taking notice of a spot called 224 Boston. [...]

South Boston Online stopped by M Street Park (Lee Playground) recently to check out the city’s Summer Sports Center.  The Boston Parks and Rec Department offers these free drop-in sports centers around the city from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the week for boys and girls ages 7-14. Each location offers instruction in several popular sports. And every week, clinics are held on different activities, such as soccer and hockey. The Bruins’ mascot, Blades, made an appearance at M Street Park recently.  Five kids had signed up for a day of fun, sports, and camaraderie Tuesday. The program at M Street has about 20 staff members, providing a fantastic kid-to-staffer ratio. Baseball was a highlight for the kids that day, while many of the [...]

By Ginger DeShaney For Brian Castellucci, “Fitness is not a destination. It's a way of life.” So when he was let go during the pandemic from the gym he worked at for a dozen years, the personal trainer found a way to rebuild himself and build his own fitness business.  “I kind of got forced into a situation,” said Brian, 34, owner of BCFitness. But he has made the best of it. ”I did a lot of virtual stuff at first. I contacted every client I've ever been with,” he said, noting he was able to reconnect with people and was training clients as far away as England. “So it was kind of cool.” When restrictions lifted a bit and he could work with clients [...]

Look Who’s Cooking: Tatyana Sukennik

2022-07-25T09:38:27-04:00July 25th, 2022|Categories: Business, Featured|Comments Off on Look Who’s Cooking: Tatyana Sukennik

Owner/chef of Fromage at 401 West Broadway for the past seven years, Tatyana Sukennik, originally from Ukraine, has both the delicacy and conviction well expressed in her fine European inspired menu of freshly made crepes, soups, and a distinguished wine bar. She is also someone who seized an opportunity after working at Mass. General Hospital as a medical technol-ogist in the transplant unit for almost twenty years. As with many natural cooks, it was common for her to be encouraged to start a restaurant, but quite another to convert a former pizza place into a sophisticated and unique bistro on one of the busiest and most restaurant saturated streets in South Boston. “My mother was an amazing cook. If you asked her for a recipe, [...]

2022-07-21T17:57:24-04:00July 21st, 2022|Categories: Featured, Happenings, Lifestyle|Comments Off on Artistic Vision: Virginia Kropas’ Garden is a Masterpiece

By Ginger DeShaney “All gardening is landscape painting.”  – Alexander Pope This rings true at Virginia Kropas’ Hardy Street house. Virginia is an artist and her garden is her palette of color, shape, and texture … and her serenity.  “I can shut out most of the sounds,” she said. “It’s very peaceful. I can rest my eyes on green stuff.” Virginia gets a great view of the back yard from her second-floor deck, where her cat, Abigail, likes to hang out, too.  “I come out when I get up,” Virginia said, noting she may be in the garden working, or looking at it, for up to two hours in the morning. “I may just be staring and contemplating.” She also comes out in the evening. [...]

By Carol Masshardt Healthcare is a challenging profession, and addiction services is among the most daunting. The nature of the issue thwarts patients and those who work with them in a process requiring enormous patience and determination with societal stigma present. Many providers stay clear from this work fearing endless frustration and the utter skill and understanding needed, but the Gavin Foundations Clinical Director, Evangelos “Lucky” Adamos-Nomikos, 37, isn’t one of them. He believes “anyone can recover” and that is what his guiding star every day. “I have been in recovery myself for ten years, and after getting a degree in Counseling Psychology and Mental Health Counseling, I worked in residential jobs and always heard about the “Gavin,” and knew it would offer opportunities. There [...]

By Ginger DeShaney MaryAnne Miller’s backyard garden oasis on I Street is a haven for bees.  “Bees are our friends,” she said. “I love bees.” MaryAnne has myriad pollinator-friendly plants to attract the bees.  “I understand these are our friends that are too busy working to bother you. So you need to keep the bees going. “I’m obsessed with bees.” MaryAnne combines plants that she knows the bees like and that she likes as well, such as sage, salvia, dill, calendula, mini sunflowers, wildflowers, dahlias, lobelia, and Dusty Millers (in honor of her last name). “I've had many, many bumblebees, which makes me so happy,” said MaryAnne, who has lived in her I Street house for 45 years. Her garden is a retirement/pandemic gift to [...]

Look Who’s Cooking: Rory Lee

2022-07-01T13:24:25-04:00July 1st, 2022|Categories: Business, Featured|Comments Off on Look Who’s Cooking: Rory Lee

By Carol Masshardt This is a story of an old bar with a decidedly South Boston history, now an updated pub by new owners, John and Anne Lydon, and a chef who saw an opportunity. The Shamrock Pub is on the corner of H. and Eighth, formerly Touchie’s, and is as close as it gets to a comfortable spot that knows familiar tastes while stretching into a more diverse neighborhood. First, John and Anne saw that the place was for sale, and it happened to be the location that John’s grandfather, John Clougher, owned in the early 80’s. They both still shake their heads about the leap but seem to smile easily with pleasure when talking about the decision. “I’m an attorney, said John, “I [...]
