2021-09-11T08:26:56-04:00September 11th, 2021|Categories: Editorial, Featured|Comments Off on Remember: It Has Been Twenty Years

Today, September 11, is the twentieth (20th) anniversary of the tragic terrorist attack on America, at 9 a.m. Tuesday morning, September 11, 2001.  Nineteen members of al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial flights in Boston and New York.  All of these planes crashed; three of them managed to intentionally destroy major buildings in New York and Washington, D.C.  Thousands died.  This is a tragedy that we must never forget, so please make it a point to visit the Massachusetts September 11 Memorial in the southwest corner of Boston’s Public Garden. American deaths from the 9-11 hijackings finally amounted to 2,977.  The large majority of these casualties were civilians.  No, 9-11 was not a battle in any way.  It was a war crime committed by infidel terrorists, mostly [...]

By Ginger DeShaney The new yoga studio at 249 E Street is an inviting spot for the community to feel comfortable and connected. “We just kind of wanted to make a space that felt like a playground; where people could just walk in and connect with others and not feel the pressure of having to perform anything,” said Emily Arlauskas, one of the three young owners of the Yoga Playground. “Like a little kid on a playground, you take chances and try things and don’t worry too much if it’s going to be right.” Emily, 25, her sister, Hannah Arlauskas, 23, and Emily’s roommate, Natalie Wannamaker, 24 -- all graduates of Northeastern and all Southie residents -- opened the studio on Aug. 15, 2021.“Anyone is [...]

2021-09-02T16:45:45-04:00September 2nd, 2021|Categories: Featured, Happenings, Lifestyle, Sports|Comments Off on Splashing & Dashing on Kids Day

Photos by Ginger DeShaney Kids ages 7 to 15 got a taste of what it’s like to do a triathlon.  Kids Day at the Columbia Threadneedle Investments Boston Triathlon at DCR’s Mother’s Rest Saturday, Aug. 28, featured the USA Triathlon-sanctioned Splash & Dash event, which is designed to introduce young athletes to the sport of triathlon.  The youngsters participated in a swim and run based on their age group. The weather was cloudy and cool, but that didn’t deter the kids as they tackled a 100-yard swim (age groups 7-8 and 9-10) or a 200-yard swim along Carson Beach in shallow water. Once out of the water, the kids raced to put on their shoes to run a 1K on the Harborwalk and the DCR [...]

By Ginger DeShaney Armed with trash bags and bright yellow kitchen gloves, Kristin Price is doing her part for the South Boston community and the environment through her Southie Beach Club, a community dedicated to keeping Southie beaches clean and protecting our earth. She gets out every week, usually on Mondays, rain or shine, to pick up trash. “I always collect a full full-sized trash bag, even if it’s just in 20 minutes,” she said, noting she usually starts at the beach at the end of K Street. For her tireless work, Andrew Orpik nominated Kristin for South Boston Online’s Volunteer Spotlight. “Our good friend Kristin Price started a Monday morning ‘Southie Beach Club’ where she goes to clean up the beach by hand of [...]

Boston Mayor Kim Janey cut the ribbon on O’Connor Way Senior Housing Wednesday afternoon to officially welcome home its residents.  “Whenever I can cut a ribbon on new housing, or housing that’s affordable, or housing that is for seniors, it is a wonderful day in the city of Boston,” the mayor said. “We’re really excited to be here today,” Donna Brown, executive director of the South Boston Neighborhood Development Corporation, said in her opening remarks. “We completed this project in December and we have not been able to celebrate until now.” O’Connor Way, which boasts 46 units of affordable housing for the elderly, was developed on vacant land donated by the Boston Housing Authority. The project was spearheaded through a partnership of the South Boston [...]

2021-08-29T10:11:37-04:00August 29th, 2021|Categories: Business, Featured, Happenings, Lifestyle|Comments Off on Southie Store Sprouts from Owner’s Boston Roots

By Ginger DeShaney A new store has sprouted up in Southie and it’s all about community.  Sprout, at 47 L Street, is a specialty shop that offers daily grocery needs -- produce, dairy, grains, and bread -- but also a selection of oils, vinegars, spices, natural preservatives, spreads, yogurts, Italian sweets, artisanal cheeses, beverages, and so much more. Grab and go sandwiches, wraps, and salads are also available. Owner Nazih Kishtban opened the store Aug. 2 and already has had good foot traffic. Nazih had never opened a business. But when the COVID-19 pandemic derailed a new job he was supposed to start, he reevaluated his life. Feeling lost and confused, he volunteered with the Food Bank, helping package food, do deliveries, and more. After [...]

By Ginger DeShaney The youngsters at Moakley Park’s tennis courts had a blast sharpening their skills, getting in some reading, and playing group games Friday as Tenacity ended its 2021 summer run. Thousands of kids across 18 Boston locations took part in the six-week tennis and reading program. Families could sign up their kids for just one week, all six weeks, or any number of weeks in between. It’s completely free. The morning sessions were for kids ages 6 to 10; the afternoon sessions for kids 11 to 15. South Boston Online stopped by the morning session Friday to take photos. During the summer, the kids’ daily schedule would start with exercises, stretching, and group activities. Then they would go to stations for tennis, reading, [...]

2021-08-19T21:42:22-04:00August 19th, 2021|Categories: Featured, Happenings, Lifestyle|Comments Off on Listening is Lauretta Brennan’s Superpower

By Ginger DeShaney   “I’m not even really a volunteer,” Lauretta Brennan said.  But many people in South Boston beg to differ.  Dawn Marie Gullage, one of four people who nominated Lauretta for South Boston Online’s new feature, Volunteer Spotlight, said Lauretta is worthy of the recognition. “She is a single mother who works hard to raise her son, yet is always giving back to the community,” she said.  In Beth Nagle’s nomination, she said, “Lauretta Brennan is always giving and helping out any way she can!” According to nominator Melissa Mcauliffe, “Lauretta Brennan is amazingly kind and always going out of her way for the people of Southie.” And Deborah Omalley concurred that Lauretta is always helping someone out. Even though Lauretta is not an [...]

By Ginger DeShaney With bibs proudly pinned to their shirts, the excited young runners lined up on the Saunders Stadium track. At Coach Thomas White’s direction, the runners blazed down the track, wearing their game faces, which ranged from wide smiles to determined seriousness.  Once that group reached the finish line, Thomas prepared the next group of runners for their race. About 60 kids ages 6-13 gathered at the Moakley Park stadium Monday for their weekly session of the Youth Enrichment Services (YES) summer track and field program. While the younger kids took part in the developmental meet, the older kids did drills. The previous week, it was reversed, with the older kids having a meet and the younger kids doing drills.   Those drills included [...]
