In honor of the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, Patron Saint of Animals, the community came with their lovable family pets to the Annual Blessing of the Animals on Sunday, Oct. 6, outside of Gate of Heaven Church. Father Robert Casey, Father Peter Schirripa, and Deacon Tommy O'Donnell, SJ, were happy to be able to bless the pets and greet the families. On Friday, Oct. 4, the students, families, faculty, and staff at South Boston Catholic Academy were able to get their family pets blessed, too. Father Schirripa did the blessings.

BOSTON, OCT. 9 -- At this week’s Boston City Council Meeting, City Councilors Ed Flynn and Erin Murphy filed a resolution in support of the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA). The ILA is the largest union of maritime workers in North America and represents 45,000 members. Last week, they went on strike against the U.S. Marine Alliance (USMX) due to a labor dispute regarding fair wages, safe working conditions, and protections against automation. At midnight last Tuesday, dockworkers at 36 ports along the East and Gulf Coasts went on strike against the USMX, an alliance of container shipping lines and port operators, after contract negotiations between the ILA and USMX reached an impasse. Rocks hold a special meaning for the McGrath family.  “After the accident, when we were still in the hospital, people dropped off painted rocks on our front steps. It started with one rock that just said ‘love’ on it,” said Kerri McGrath, Colin’s mom. “And the next thing you know, our entire front steps were covered in rocks.” Colin McGrath was almost 3 years old in July 2018 when he was killed by a vehicle in South Boston. Over this last weekend, an important management change occurred in South Boston. Friday, was the last day that John McGahan served as the long-time leader of the Gavin Foundation. Peter Barbuto formally assumed the position of Gavin Foundation’s President and CEO. The changeover was marked with a breakfast at the Gavin’s Devine Center. Obviously, John and Peter’s transition was “in process” for a considerable time before this weekend – they spent more than full time for several weeks making sure their transition was both smooth and successful.
