SBAA September Meeting

2016-09-15T09:52:08-04:00September 15th, 2016|Categories: News|Comments Off on SBAA September Meeting

The SBAA (South Boston Arts Association) held its monthly meeting last Saturday morning. As soon as SBAA President Dan McCole opened the meeting, it became immediately evident that community activity was a key topic. One important business item was the pursuit of a South Boston center for the arts – perhaps in one wing of the proposed new development on Summer Street, where the mothballed power plant now sits. Dan thanked Nancy Maggs for her striking poster about the mural painted by 11 SBAA artists on the Harry McDonough Sailing Center’s north. Look for yourself; it’s easily seen across Pleasure Bay. The SBAA’s new Public Relations Director, Janice Williams from Roslindale, was then introduced. Janice is pictured to the right in the photo above. She [...]

Remembering Lori Miller

2016-09-15T09:41:44-04:00September 15th, 2016|Categories: News|Comments Off on Remembering Lori Miller

As you might imagine, our memories of Lori Miller were mostly connected with the articles South Boston Online wrote about her and her incredibly valuable efforts and accomplishments  in the South Boston community.        She was a South Boston dynamo; she is already sorely missed. Born into another loyal South Boston family as Lori A. Mirisola, she had deep, deep roots here.  As sad as it was to hear of Lori’s passing, the words used in her obituary were an inspiring tribute to her life – words such as “legendary”, “cherished”, “grace and courage rarely seen”, “spirited and generous”,  “beloved, respected, and actively involved”, “richly blessed”, “always up for a new adventure”, and “paying her blessings forward”.  Every one of those words is [...]

9-11, Fifteen Years Later

2016-09-15T09:38:15-04:00September 15th, 2016|Categories: Featured, Happenings|Comments Off on 9-11, Fifteen Years Later

Last Sunday, September 11, 2016, was cloudy and humid, although it was nothing like the drencher on September 11 last year. The Boston Public Garden was a welcome green space, after our long summer drought. Shortly before 7:30 a.m., a crowd of perhaps 200 or more gathered at the site of the 9-11 Memorial to the right of the Garden’s Arlington Street entrance. They were there to take part in the 2016 Memorial Ceremony – the 15th such event. Among the attendees were Governor Charlie Baker, Lt.-Gov. Karyn Polito, and Mayor Marty Walsh. The 9-11 Memorial – “The people of Massachusetts will always remember … “ - is something like a grotto. One can sit and contemplate the sweep of the granite scroll containing the [...]

Rockin’ at the 2016 Curly Center Beach Party

2016-09-08T10:39:25-04:00September 8th, 2016|Categories: Featured|Comments Off on Rockin’ at the 2016 Curly Center Beach Party

by Rick Winterson For the last several years the Curley Community Center has hosted an Annual End-of-Summer Beach Party on its enclosed beach on the M Street side of the Center. This year was no exception; it was a fitting way to bid summer goodbye. The party was presented with the courtesy of Massport, at the Curley Center, which is part of the City of Boston’s Centers for Youth and Families. The weather smiled, the refreshments refreshed, and the entertainment was excellent. And the event was blessedly free and open to all. With many guests entering and exiting it was hard to estimate the crowd; but perhaps several hundred were in attendance. Until the sun set water play was the order of the evening. Mother [...]

South Boston Vietnam Memorial 35th Anniversary

2016-09-08T10:34:31-04:00September 8th, 2016|Categories: Featured, Happenings|Comments Off on South Boston Vietnam Memorial 35th Anniversary

The South Boston Vietnam Memorial Committee extends an invitation to the South Boston Community and friends to attend the Thirty-Fifth Anniversary of the South Boston Vietnam Memorial on Sunday, September 18, 2015. We dedicate this year’s ceremony Thirty-Fifth years ago, the promise we made to the Twenty-Five of our fallen friends and to the community as a whole, were realized. The people of South Boston were among the very first to recognize the sacrifice the Vietnam Veterans made in the name of freedom. We will forever be proud of this. The people of South Boston built that monument. Building it, however, was only half of the pledge we made to ourselves. The other half is inscribed across the face of the memorial: If you forget [...]

Joe “Dodo” Nee Leaves Us

2016-09-08T10:32:36-04:00September 8th, 2016|Categories: Featured, News|Comments Off on Joe “Dodo” Nee Leaves Us

By Rick Winterson You have heard that Joseph “Dodo” Nee died this week. He fought a long and a largely successful battle against his illness, but it finally overcame him. His death is a great and very sad loss to the South Boston community. Residents of our beautiful neighborhood saw Dodo everywhere; he took part in our lives with great joy. We have chosen a photo from South Boston Online’s archives that shows Dodo (to the left) as we would like to remember him – with his friends, taking part in a fundraiser, a “Southie time” for the South Boston Collaborative Center, one of his favorite and most successful community projects.

Four Hundred boxers from around the world competed in 300 fights in this three-day event (May 20-22) at la Cite du Sport de Terrebonne, where all fighters were giving “body and soul in hopes of bringing home the much sought after Imperium Cup.” The Tank won both of his fights on TKO’s and captured the tournament championship. He was also chosen as the Fighter of the Tournament, [...]
