JOKR, an instant grocery delivery company at 301 W. Broadway, held a virtual abutters meeting Monday, Jan. Jan. 10, to discuss its plan to apply for a liquor license and got pushback from some residents and support from others.  The company, which launched in South Boston at the end of November, is looking to add alcohol delivery to its repertoire, as it does in New York. The virtual meeting drew almost 40 people. “I do not support the delivery of alcohol from this store,” said City Councilor Ed Flynn, who lives near the store and notes no residents have asked him to support this proposal. “I’m not sure if the demand is there for delivering alcohol and liquor in the neighborhood … I know it’s [...]

Coming Into Focus: Photographer Tells Stories Through A Different Lens

2021-12-04T09:04:16-05:00December 4th, 2021|Categories: Business, Featured, Happenings, Lifestyle|Comments Off on Coming Into Focus: Photographer Tells Stories Through A Different Lens

By Ginger DeShaney John McCosh is a storyteller.  But he doesn’t use words to tell stories … he uses his camera, living by his philosophy of photo “fabula” (Russian for “story”).  “Photography is kind of like a poem,” said the owner of South Boston’s LightFlex Studios in the Distillery Gallery at 516 E. 2nd St., Suite 104. “Whatever you get with a poem, you can get with a picture. A thousand words for a picture, I would say make it 80 words and make it poetry.” And every good story includes people. When John first started out, he was focusing on landscapes. “But you know what? People are the story,” he said. “The more you can get a human, relatable moment, the more it's going [...]

By Ginger DeShaney Happy Fairgiving! Or rather, Happy Thanksgiving, thanks in part to Fairway Independent Mortgage.  Fairway has donation boxes in nine South Boston businesses to collect food for St. Monica’s Thanksgiving meals. But Fairway isn’t just collecting the regular items. “[St. Monica’s] suggested some fun desserts: cake mixes and frosting and brownie mixes in addition to instant potatoes, cornbread, and cookie mixes,” said Colleen Howard, Fairway’s new marketing and business development coordinator. “Everyone always thinks of the typical stuff, like stuffing and canned veggies, but in addition they will be making a bunch of desserts to keep it fun.” Fairgiving is a new initiative Colleen started this year to help St. Monica’s in its mission to feed 400 local families for Thanksgiving. “St. Monica’s [...]

By Ginger DeShaney The banter between Lisa Walsh and Nikki McCart is easy because they’ve been friends forever. They finish each other’s sentences. They laugh a lot because, well, they are downright hilarious.  The second you are in their presence, you feel like family.  And that’s exactly how they want it.  Lisa, 41, and Nikki, 37 -- who were both born and raised in Southie -- opened MW Hair Studio at 401 W. First St. (right next to Publico) on Oct. 1 and the atmosphere is very welcoming. “The goal is to make everybody feel like they have someplace they belong,” Lisa said. “We want everyone to feel comfortable and at home and relaxed,” Nikki said. “That’s kind of the vibe we like in here. By Ginger DeShaney Early Wednesday morning, a line had gathered at Tatte Bakery & Cafe at 60 Old Colony Ave. before the shop officially opened its doors at 8 a.m. By 10 a.m., people were set up at tables and counters with their laptops to do some work, orders of shakshuka were being consumed, and the coffee machines were buzzing. “I’m very excited to be here,” said founder Tzurit Or, who greeted customers offering their congratulations and hugs on the Southie location’s Opening Day. “It’s great. I could feel the anticipation from the neighborhood,” she said, noting she had gotten a lot of questions about when the bakery was going to open. Tatte is the anchor of National Development’s redevelopment of the Cole Hersee complex [...]

By Ginger DeShaney In Good Company at 653 E. Broadway is so much more than a gift shop. It’s also a safe space, a supportive environment, and a meeting place. “The goal is to build a presence in the community around the shop that is a space where people go to feel good,” said owner Kait McKenna. “I want the shop to be a bright spot on the street where people can come to a meeting place ... A space that they can trust to buy meaningful gifts. It’s a space for people to express their individuality and spread kindness through gift giving and meaningful conversation.” In Good Company displays an LGBTQ flag in the window, which “is representative of a safe space for the [...]

By Ginger DeShaney There are a lot of growing businesses in South Boston, but only one is an actual farm. “I feel like it would be cool for more people to know [about the farm] because this is something really unique and special in Boston and in the city,” said Boston Microgreens cofounder and CEO Oliver Homberg. “It’s the most central production farm in Boston.” After growing microgreens in his South End apartment to provide for a handful of local restaurants, Oliver decided to expand the business into a space at 416 W. Broadway. He grows 75-plus varieties of microgreens based on what his restaurant customers want. “We are a custom urban farm,” Oliver said.  Oliver provides microgreens to more than 50 restaurant customers; he [...]

By Ginger DeShaney The new yoga studio at 249 E Street is an inviting spot for the community to feel comfortable and connected. “We just kind of wanted to make a space that felt like a playground; where people could just walk in and connect with others and not feel the pressure of having to perform anything,” said Emily Arlauskas, one of the three young owners of the Yoga Playground. “Like a little kid on a playground, you take chances and try things and don’t worry too much if it’s going to be right.” Emily, 25, her sister, Hannah Arlauskas, 23, and Emily’s roommate, Natalie Wannamaker, 24 -- all graduates of Northeastern and all Southie residents -- opened the studio on Aug. 15, 2021.“Anyone is [...]

2021-08-29T10:11:37-04:00August 29th, 2021|Categories: Business, Featured, Happenings, Lifestyle|Comments Off on Southie Store Sprouts from Owner’s Boston Roots

By Ginger DeShaney A new store has sprouted up in Southie and it’s all about community.  Sprout, at 47 L Street, is a specialty shop that offers daily grocery needs -- produce, dairy, grains, and bread -- but also a selection of oils, vinegars, spices, natural preservatives, spreads, yogurts, Italian sweets, artisanal cheeses, beverages, and so much more. Grab and go sandwiches, wraps, and salads are also available. Owner Nazih Kishtban opened the store Aug. 2 and already has had good foot traffic. Nazih had never opened a business. But when the COVID-19 pandemic derailed a new job he was supposed to start, he reevaluated his life. Feeling lost and confused, he volunteered with the Food Bank, helping package food, do deliveries, and more. After [...]
