2021-09-30T18:53:57-04:00September 30th, 2021|Categories: Featured, Happenings, Lifestyle|Comments Off on Art in the Park: Free Class Draws People to Pappas Way

By Ginger DeShaney The setting was amazing, the weather was perfect, the class was a blast, and people were happy to be outside.  Almost 50 people gathered at the Rec Station at Pappas Way last Saturday for an afternoon of exploring color and paint.  Local artist Erica Goldstein, founder of the Blank Canvas Co., led the free community art class in which adults painted an Aperol Spritz and kids painted oranges. Teachers Gabriella Mirabella and Jill MacInnis came in from out of town for the event. Jill heard about the event on Erica’s Instagram. Jill and Gabriella were both on the waitlist for this session and were thrilled to get the notification that they were in. “I like being outside,” said Jill, who noted that [...]

2021-09-26T19:15:22-04:00September 26th, 2021|Categories: Business, Featured, Happenings, Lifestyle|Comments Off on Boston Microgreens: This Business is Literally Growing

By Ginger DeShaney There are a lot of growing businesses in South Boston, but only one is an actual farm. “I feel like it would be cool for more people to know [about the farm] because this is something really unique and special in Boston and in the city,” said Boston Microgreens cofounder and CEO Oliver Homberg. “It’s the most central production farm in Boston.” After growing microgreens in his South End apartment to provide for a handful of local restaurants, Oliver decided to expand the business into a space at 416 W. Broadway. He grows 75-plus varieties of microgreens based on what his restaurant customers want. “We are a custom urban farm,” Oliver said.  Oliver provides microgreens to more than 50 restaurant customers; he [...]

Deconstruction of the Edison Power Plant to Begin

2021-09-22T16:37:57-04:00September 22nd, 2021|Categories: Featured, Real Estate|Comments Off on Deconstruction of the Edison Power Plant to Begin

by Rick Winterson  Tuesday evening at 6 p.m., a ZOOM meeting began, which concerned the major project at 776 Summer Street.  This ZOOM meeting explained the first onsite step, called “Deconstruction,” in developing the property where the Edison Power Plant now sits – at the 776 Summer Street address, from the Dedicated Freight Corridor near the Reserved Channel, and extending around the corner of East First Street.  The developer of this property is Hilco Redevelopment Partners (HRP), who acquired the property five years ago. The property to be developed was once called the Edison Power Plant, or just “the Edison”.  L Street Station was another name it had.  South Boston Online will refer to it as HRP’s development or as “776 Summer Street”, the address [...]

2021-09-16T15:43:57-04:00September 16th, 2021|Categories: Featured, Happenings, Lifestyle, News|Comments Off on Sending Off Summer in Style

By Ginger DeShaney Summer went out with a bang Saturday, Sept. 11, thanks to the Carson Beach Summer Send-Off. People of all ages gathered at the McCormack Bath House for a beautiful afternoon of fun and exploration. Several organizations came together to help South Boston say farewell to the season: Boston Harbor Now, National Park Service, National Park Foundation, Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, City of Boston, Coalition for a Resilient and Inclusive Waterfront, Save the Harbor/Save the Bay, Piers Park Sailing Center, and Volo Sports. Boston Harbor Now works in collaboration with many organizations, said Jenn Meakem, community engagement specialist. So when they decided they had to do something at Carson Beach at the end of the summer, they reached out to groups [...]

Remember: It Has Been Twenty Years

2021-09-11T08:26:56-04:00September 11th, 2021|Categories: Editorial, Featured|Comments Off on Remember: It Has Been Twenty Years

Today, September 11, is the twentieth (20th) anniversary of the tragic terrorist attack on America, at 9 a.m. Tuesday morning, September 11, 2001.  Nineteen members of al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial flights in Boston and New York.  All of these planes crashed; three of them managed to intentionally destroy major buildings in New York and Washington, D.C.  Thousands died.  This is a tragedy that we must never forget, so please make it a point to visit the Massachusetts September 11 Memorial in the southwest corner of Boston’s Public Garden. American deaths from the 9-11 hijackings finally amounted to 2,977.  The large majority of these casualties were civilians.  No, 9-11 was not a battle in any way.  It was a war crime committed by infidel terrorists, mostly [...]

By Ginger DeShaney The new yoga studio at 249 E Street is an inviting spot for the community to feel comfortable and connected. “We just kind of wanted to make a space that felt like a playground; where people could just walk in and connect with others and not feel the pressure of having to perform anything,” said Emily Arlauskas, one of the three young owners of the Yoga Playground. “Like a little kid on a playground, you take chances and try things and don’t worry too much if it’s going to be right.” Emily, 25, her sister, Hannah Arlauskas, 23, and Emily’s roommate, Natalie Wannamaker, 24 -- all graduates of Northeastern and all Southie residents -- opened the studio on Aug. 15, 2021.“Anyone is [...]

2021-09-02T16:45:45-04:00September 2nd, 2021|Categories: Featured, Happenings, Lifestyle, Sports|Comments Off on Splashing & Dashing on Kids Day

Photos by Ginger DeShaney Kids ages 7 to 15 got a taste of what it’s like to do a triathlon.  Kids Day at the Columbia Threadneedle Investments Boston Triathlon at DCR’s Mother’s Rest Saturday, Aug. 28, featured the USA Triathlon-sanctioned Splash & Dash event, which is designed to introduce young athletes to the sport of triathlon.  The youngsters participated in a swim and run based on their age group. The weather was cloudy and cool, but that didn’t deter the kids as they tackled a 100-yard swim (age groups 7-8 and 9-10) or a 200-yard swim along Carson Beach in shallow water. Once out of the water, the kids raced to put on their shoes to run a 1K on the Harborwalk and the DCR [...]

2021-08-30T17:05:30-04:00August 30th, 2021|Categories: Featured, Happenings, Lifestyle|Comments Off on Life’s a Beach (Cleanup) for Kristin Price

By Ginger DeShaney Armed with trash bags and bright yellow kitchen gloves, Kristin Price is doing her part for the South Boston community and the environment through her Southie Beach Club, a community dedicated to keeping Southie beaches clean and protecting our earth. She gets out every week, usually on Mondays, rain or shine, to pick up trash. “I always collect a full full-sized trash bag, even if it’s just in 20 minutes,” she said, noting she usually starts at the beach at the end of K Street. For her tireless work, Andrew Orpik nominated Kristin for South Boston Online’s Volunteer Spotlight. “Our good friend Kristin Price started a Monday morning ‘Southie Beach Club’ where she goes to clean up the beach by hand of [...]
