Southie Comes Through – Happy St. Patrick’s Day

2020-03-17T13:47:04-04:00March 17th, 2020|Categories: Featured, Happenings|Comments Off on Southie Comes Through – Happy St. Patrick’s Day

It was Sunday morning, March 15.  Although it was cold, the sun was brilliant – a typical day in mid-March, and reasonably favorable weather for the St. Patrick’s/Evacuation Day Parade.  But the Parade had been cancelled because of the feared depredations of the Coronavirus plague, which has turned into a pandemic.  And make no mistake.  This cancellation was justified, because Coronavirus is highly contagious and can be lethal, especially to older people.  Even so, South Boston’s spirit came through, and in our own quiet but hearty, heartwarming way, we celebrated our unique double holidays – St. Patrick’s Day and Evacuation Day (America’s first ever military victory). Vendors of Irish goods, which were emblazoned with Southie Irish insignia and even the word “Canceled”, installed temporary pop-up [...]

Tom Tinlin Named 2020 “Champion” by South Boston Neighborhood House

2020-03-12T10:35:19-04:00March 12th, 2020|Categories: Featured, Happenings|Comments Off on Tom Tinlin Named 2020 “Champion” by South Boston Neighborhood House

When Tom Tinlin joins you for breakfast, you can be sure that he’ll show up wreathed in smiles and ready to share a laugh (or laughs) with you.  That’s just the way Tom is, and the description applies to Tom no matter how early it is in the day – this interview took place while we both were still feeling the effects of that hour lost to Daylight Savings Time. Tom is to be deservedly honored with this year’s Joseph “Dodo” Nee “Champion” Award, which will be conferred upon him by the South Boston Neighborhood House (the SBNH) on Friday evening, March 27.  The occasion is the SBNH’s Annual Benefit & Auction; the locale will be the elegant Harborview Ballroom at the Seaport World Trade [...]

Harry Uhlman – A Few Thoughts

2020-02-06T14:34:13-05:00February 6th, 2020|Categories: Featured|Comments Off on Harry Uhlman – A Few Thoughts

By now, you will have heard that Harry Uhlman has passed from us. At 87, Harry had lived a long and very good life – a life that he devoted to others, especially to those others he called “Special Kids”.  He was a true Angel to those kids (and young adults), but he was also a humble man.  Whenever you mentioned Harry’s devotion to them, he would immediately reply, “Hey, that’s what friends are for!” The freshly renewed Marine Park Bandstand was dedicated to Harry in September of 2018.  Perhaps even more meaningful than the bronze plaque that marked the Bandstand’s dedication were the comments from those attending:  In describing Harry’s many good works, Jack Hart quoted Mother Teresa – “We can’t all do big [...]

Letter to the Editor – Pedestrian Safety

2019-11-21T06:42:58-05:00November 21st, 2019|Categories: Editorial, Featured|Comments Off on Letter to the Editor – Pedestrian Safety

Hello Southie neighbors, The way that South Boston's main streets are set up today make it easy for drivers to drive dangerously, creating unsafe conditions for pedestrians. I was hit by a car as a pedestrian walking in the crosswalk in Southie last February and am frustrated by what I see as car-centered traffic management here. Car drivers have a sense of entitlement to the road that makes walking around the neighborhood treacherous in some places. Fortunately, there are several streets that can be quickly, easily, and inexpensively made safer if our elected officials know that there's neighborhood support for the changes. Most of the traffic safety problems in Southie are caused by the high rates of speed that a lot of car drivers use [...]

2019-11-07T12:35:42-05:00November 7th, 2019|Categories: Featured, Happenings|Comments Off on Rob Pacitti to Receive “Beacon of Hope” Award

The South Boston Collaborative Center’s Annual Comedy Night is at hand.  It will take place on Friday evening, November 8, in Florian Hall at 55 Hallet Street, Dorchester.  And it will certainly be a Comedy Night.  The tentative arrangements for the comedians include Johnny P. and Artie “The Pharmacist” Januario, along with interludes of live music – please watch for postings in South Boston Online about the final roster of performers.  The November 8 Comedy Night promises to be an evening of enjoyment to remember. One of the Comedy Night’s high points will be the presentation of the 2019 Darlene Sheehan “Beacon of Hope” Award.  Darlene was one of those rare self-sacrificing individuals, who always placed the wellbeing of others above her own.  In response [...]

A Friendship “Time” for Willy Wilson – OCT 26

2019-10-16T15:49:50-04:00October 16th, 2019|Categories: Featured, Happenings|Comments Off on A Friendship “Time” for Willy Wilson – OCT 26

by Rick Winterson Willy Wilson, lovingly known  as “Mr. Hardware” of South Boston, experienced a true emergency at work, after he attended Grandparents Day at South Boston Catholic Academy.  His diabetic condition – first diagnosed when Willy had turned 30 - and the resulting neuropathy really flared up, making it necessary to amputate his left foot and part of his lower leg.  Willy is now in a wheelchair.  He has completed an arduous program at Spaulding Rehab in Charlestown.  In two weeks, he expects to be fitted with a prosthetic leg and foot.  His rehab will continue. And Willy also undergoes dialysis three times a week.  His daughter Kristen started a Facebook group seeking to find a compatible replacement kidney for him.  Tommy McGrath spotted [...]

Curley Center Renewal:  First Meeting

2019-10-01T11:45:24-04:00October 1st, 2019|Categories: Featured, News|Comments Off on Curley Center Renewal:  First Meeting

It was a full house at the Curley Center on Day Boulevard last evening, the 30th.   Several hundred concerned residents of South Boston and members of the Curley Center from all over the City (and beyond) showed up for the first introductory community meeting about the project to renew the Curley Community Center – commonly known as “the L”.   The meeting convened right at 6 p.m.  It took the following format:  Overview, Challenges, Opportunities, Schedule, and Discussion (including a Question-and-Answer session that lasted for nearly an hour).  Boston’s City of Operations Patrick Brophy hosted the meeting. South Boston Online is referring to this project as a “renewal” for several reasons.  The project as described at Monday’s meeting will deal with every portion of the L’s [...]

The South Boston Zoning Initiative (cont.)

2019-09-11T11:31:48-04:00September 11th, 2019|Categories: Featured, Real Estate|Comments Off on The South Boston Zoning Initiative (cont.)

by Rick Winterson     No one has to be told that South Boston is an unusual place.  It was annexed to the City of Boston 215 years ago in 1804, and certain areas in Southie still retains their original names, evoking a “once-upon-a-time” connection with Dorchester.  These names include Washington Village, whose brother neighborhood was Adams Village near Quincy, and of course, Dorchester Heights, the site that anchored the first Evacuation Day on March 17, 1776. After 215 years, South Boston’s historic beginnings, middles, and current-day endings have seen enormous, earthquake-like developments, accompanied by equally enormous, earthquake-like arguments between its residents and its developers.  Zoning and its controlling regulations were supposed to provide the answers (or were they?). At approximately 40,000 residents, South Boston [...]

Woods’ Farewell to H & Seventh

2019-08-08T09:01:40-04:00August 8th, 2019|Categories: Featured, Happenings|Comments Off on Woods’ Farewell to H & Seventh

Peggy Woods was born and raised in South Boston in an Irish-American family with deep cultural roots.  She and her sisters began dancing at an early age, and as a result of their hard work and determination, Peggy and Rose earned several awards at the regional and national level and hence developed their passion for Irish Dance.  Twenty five years ago, as young adults, Peggy and Roseann Woods launched their own Irish Dance School so they could preserve this strong aspect of Irish culture. They also knew that the lasting friendships, travel experiences and self-confidence that comes from Irish Dance were most valuable and wanted to share that with the South Boston community.  Always traveling alongside them was their mom, Mary and her sisters, offering [...]
