The campaign went live on SBCHC’s YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/HFxfRBrRIlE “We couldn’t be more proud of these young people” said Bill Halpin, CEO of South Boston Community Health Center. “The Youth Ambassadors have always been an important voice among their peers on critical health issues like substance abuse and anti-vaping efforts. 2021-12-04T09:04:16-05:00December 4th, 2021|Categories: Business, Featured, Happenings, Lifestyle|Comments Off on Coming Into Focus: Photographer Tells Stories Through A Different Lens

By Ginger DeShaney John McCosh is a storyteller.  But he doesn’t use words to tell stories … he uses his camera, living by his philosophy of photo “fabula” (Russian for “story”).  “Photography is kind of like a poem,” said the owner of South Boston’s LightFlex Studios in the Distillery Gallery at 516 E. 2nd St., Suite 104. “Whatever you get with a poem, you can get with a picture. A thousand words for a picture, I would say make it 80 words and make it poetry.” And every good story includes people. When John first started out, he was focusing on landscapes. “But you know what? People are the story,” he said. “The more you can get a human, relatable moment, the more it's going [...]

Our students’ have been impacted ... “We hope that this scholarship is a shining light in these students’ lives.”  In addition to the scholarship winners, John mentioned that the applicants who didn’t get scholarships were also exceptional students. “I found new inspiration for what’s [...]

By Ginger DeShaney Like a good neighbor, Hilco Redevelopment Partners is there.  HRP, the owner and developer of 776 Summer St., a 1.68-million-square-foot redevelopment of the former Edison Power Plant, donated 1,000 turkeys to South Boston families in need, working in collaboration with South Boston Association of Non-Profits (SBANP) to distribute them.  “We know that the pandemic hit families really hard,” said Jasmine Sessoms, senior vice president of corporate affairs for HRP. “We don’t want to just build in neighborhoods, we want to be good neighbors. This is our way of demonstrating that we want to be a part of the community here. Tell us what you need; we want to help out.” Jasmine said her company has donated 4,000 turkeys this year: 1,000 in [...]

Missing Ingredients: BPL Donation Initiative Looks to Spice Up Local Food Pantries

By Ginger DeShaney They say variety is the spice of life, but you’d be hard-pressed to find any spices in a food pantry. Stephanie Chace, nutritional literacy coordinator for Boston Public Library and organizer of its Spice Bank Collective, is on a mission to change that.  “It’s an idea I’ve carried with me for a very long time, probably 8 or 10 years,” she said. “Whenever I would see a call-out for a food pantry for people to donate, you would see the list of things that most pantries were looking for; nonperishables was ultimately the final message. Bring canned goods, bring boxed mac and cheese, and I was always kind of struck that spices, which are nonperishables, were never listed. “So that always stuck [...]

By Ginger DeShaney Happy Fairgiving! Or rather, Happy Thanksgiving, thanks in part to Fairway Independent Mortgage.  Fairway has donation boxes in nine South Boston businesses to collect food for St. Monica’s Thanksgiving meals. But Fairway isn’t just collecting the regular items. “[St. Monica’s] suggested some fun desserts: cake mixes and frosting and brownie mixes in addition to instant potatoes, cornbread, and cookie mixes,” said Colleen Howard, Fairway’s new marketing and business development coordinator. “Everyone always thinks of the typical stuff, like stuffing and canned veggies, but in addition they will be making a bunch of desserts to keep it fun.” Fairgiving is a new initiative Colleen started this year to help St. Monica’s in its mission to feed 400 local families for Thanksgiving. “St. Monica’s [...]

By Ginger DeShaney The wicked high tides that flooded Long Wharf and other parts of the city the weekend of Nov. 6 provided a wake-up call for Boston.  “Even though this is a natural event that we’re experiencing right now, it’s already been influenced by climate change,” said Rebecca Shoer, education and community engagement program manager for the Stone Living Lab. “We also know it’s going to keep rising. “It’s actually kind of a preview of what sea level rise might be like for Boston. Eventually this could be every single high tide.” Stone Living Lab, Boston Harbor Now, and the National Park Service hosted “Wicked High Tides” events at Long Wharf last weekend, educating people about Perigean Spring Tides and climate change. The events [...]
