Thomas Regan and Mark Delamere are in front of the map that plotted out the progress of the fundraising cyclists – Tom Regan, Michael Kineavy and Tim Connolly – which South Boston Online reported on in our last issue. Well, the riders made it all the way to Florida (look closely at the trail of thumbtacks that breaks the Florida border at Jacksonville). They completed their more than 1,000 mile odyssey Sunday afternoon, May 22, and got back to South Boston Monday night. They started their ride from South Boston on May 12. “I’m really proud of them,” Delamere said. Details of their epic ride will follow – stay tuned. George LoCascio brings a touch of Italy to the Ollie seniors

2016-05-25T12:25:52-04:00May 25th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Comments Off on George LoCascio brings a touch of Italy to the Ollie seniors

Does stuffed sausage ravioli and capreze salad bring a smile to your face, along with images of your favorite Italian restaurant? Well, that’s what Papa George did for the seniors at the South Boston Neighborhood House Senior Center. Papa George – also known as our favorite “yes” man “George LoCasio” – brought his knowledge and expertise direct from Italy by hosting a cooking demonstration and luncheon here at the center. While cooking, George entertained the seniors with marvelous stories of his ventures in Italy where he learned to cook from chef Biago Longo in Sorrento, Italy, and chef Nora Chimirri in Syracuse, Sicily. The Ollie seniors enjoyed a fabulous day starting with homemade lemoncello, and tomato with mozzarella and basil, followed by homemade garlic bread.  [...]

Memorial Day remembrance quotations

Take a moment and honor those who have protected us by their ultimate sacrifice because “they gave their todays so they we could enjoy our tomorrows.” By KEVIN DEVLIN This upcoming weekend – the Memorial Day weekend – marks the unofficial start of another summer. People will be heading to Cape Cod or up to Maine, Vermont or New Hampshire, to enjoy the scenery, beaches and barbecues. But Memorial Day signifies much more than this. It’s a time of reflection and gratitude. Freedom isn’t easy to preserve. Many men and women throughout our history had fought and died in the service of their country. Fought in defense of democracy, protected us from harm, and unselfishly paid the ultimate sacrifice. On Memorial Day we honor the [...]

Observing Memorial Day

2018-11-27T13:06:36-05:00May 25th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Comments Off on Observing Memorial Day

By KEVIN DEVLIN On Monday, May 30, Americans will celebrate Memorial Day. Unfortunately, traditional observance of this day has greatly diminished over the years. But it must be remembered, not just as a time to relax and cook a couple of steaks on the barbecue, but as a time to reflect upon those who sacrificed their lives throughout history. It must be remembered as a time to honor those who served their country, so that we could continue to enjoy our freedom and democratic way of life. It must be remembered, as stated by President George W. Bush, on Memorial Day in 2004, as a time when we honor, “All of our fallen soldiers, their commitment to our country, and their legacy of patriotism and [...]

Memorial Day: A time to mourn, remember and pray

2018-11-27T13:06:36-05:00May 25th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Comments Off on Memorial Day: A time to mourn, remember and pray

By EDWARD FLYNN – U.S. Navy (retired) This past Sunday, members and volunteers from the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Thomas J. Fitzgerald Post #561 of South Boston, visited several cemeteries throughout Boston to place American flags in front of each headstone of a military veteran. This time honored tradition, ensures each veteran is remembered and honored, as we also reflect on Memorial Day in our country. We were touched to see the determination of Sister Lois Connors and Sister Florence Kahler (Sisters of Saint Joseph), join other volunteers in walking the hallowed grounds of New Calvary Cemetery in Mattapan and St. Joseph Cemetery in West Roxbury, seeking the names of veterans to properly place an American flag at the gravesite. Other post volunteers also visited [...]

By RICK WINTERSON Describe it however you want: The renowned “Southie time” not only raises money in support of countless people and worthy causes, it also becomes a marvelously enjoyable event in the process. The “Southie time” is a true social phenomenon. This particular “Southie time” is called “A Bike Ride for Mark’s New Ride” and is happening right now. The story began tragically in 2013, when Mark Delamere was only 14 years old. He was in a horrible car accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Despite being wheelchair bound, Mark was not one to hang back. He enrolled in Motivated Fitness (315 West Broadway), where he has worked out at least twice a week ever since his accident. Thomas Regan, the [...]

2016-05-18T13:46:12-04:00May 18th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Comments Off on Team Opportunity Foundation holds fundraiser for Quincy-based program

By KEVIN DEVLIN The Team Opportunity Foundation held a fundraiser at Carson Place on Saturday, May 14. Hundreds of people attended to support this new endeavor and had a great time seeing old friends and dancing to the music supplied by well-known DJ, Dru Errico. The drug epidemic has worsened and local resident Thomas McCarthy, was devastated by what he has witnessed. But this devastation turned into inspiration for McCarthy, inspiration to found the Team Opportunity pilot program, a one-to-two year plan in a very structured environment offering an intense, 12-step program. He hopes to open this house in June in Quincy. But he needs help. “I’m trying to get people involved in the process,” McCarthy said. “I’m trying to get rid of the stigma [...]

Memorial Day Mass on Dorchester Heights

Phil Wuschke, a veteran, called South Boston Online to alert us to the planned Memorial Day observance on South Boston’s Dorchester Heights. Mass, to be followed by appropriate Memorial Day ceremonies, will begin at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 30. Memorial Day began as “Decoration Day” 150 years ago in 1866. Its observance is a historically important American custom, which remembers the ultimate sacrifice paid by those military veterans who died in combat. The public is invited. See you there. -Rick Winterson
