By Ginger DeShaney The Department of Conservation and Recreation and BSC Design Group held a public meeting Wednesday night to present their design – inspired by neighborhood kids – for improvements to the Michael Joyce Memorial Playground at Marine Park.  Residents and elected officials expressed concern that the meeting was not widely advertised, therefore many people didn’t know about it. DCR officials pledged to improve outreach and notification for the next public meeting in March. JOKR, an instant grocery delivery company at 301 W. Broadway, held a virtual abutters meeting Monday, Jan. Jan. 10, to discuss its plan to apply for a liquor license and got pushback from some residents and support from others.  The company, which launched in South Boston at the end of November, is looking to add alcohol delivery to its repertoire, as it does in New York. By Ginger DeShaney New City Councilor At-Large Erin Murphy was sworn in for the second time in a month on Monday, Jan. 3, 2022,  signaling the start of her official term. Murphy got a headstart in learning the ropes at City Hall after being sworn in on Dec. 1, 2021, to fill Mayor Michelle Wu’s at-large seat.  “It’s been exciting,” Murphy said in mid-December after her first few weeks. “I’ve been finding my way around.”  When Wu was sworn in early to finish out Marty Walsh’s term, her at-large seat from the 2019 election came open. People of all ages took the traditional dip at M Street Beach Saturday morning to ring in the new year. While not an official L Street Brownies-sanctioned event this year (the bath house is still being renovated), people were encouraged to swim and record themselves. A very enthusiastic crowd gathered. The teens, all fully vaccinated, spearheaded a video/social media project to encourage other teens to get vaccinated after discovering that many of their peers and classmates were still not vaccinated against the virus. Michael Indresano, of Indresano Productions donated his studio time and talent to help the teens bring their vision to reality. Mayor Michelle Wu was in South Boston Sunday to light the tree at Medal of Honor Park. A huge crowd gathered to witness the event and take part in all the activities, such as pop a shot, bouncy houses and obstacles, snacks, gift bags, and so much more. In addition to Santa, Mrs. Claus, Frosty, and Rudolph, there were appearances by Paw Patrol's Chase and Marshall, Frozen's Elsa and Olaf, Toy Story's Woody and Buzz, as well as our local politicians. By Ginger DeShaney  Sixteen outstanding South Boston students were awarded $2,000 grants from the South Boston Sports Hall of Fame Scholarship Trust Fund on Nov. 26. “It’s been an incredibly difficult last 20 months for everybody,” ceremony emcee and Trustee John Beatty said at the Walsh Gym. People have been affected in different ways, he said: “Some with physical hardship or illness, in some cases losing family members; businesses have been impacted, jobs have been impacted, family lives have been impacted.
