Basra-Boston Connections

2016-10-13T11:38:05-04:00October 13th, 2016|Categories: Featured, News|Comments Off on Basra-Boston Connections

by Rick Winterson The Fort Point Theater Channel (FPTC) has produced many fine, memorable live performances over the past several years. One of the more remarkable of these was the first performance on October 1 of “Basra-Boston Connections” in the Atlantic Wharf performance space at 290 Congress Street. This stirring production, which was blessedly free to all, will be repeated on Friday evening, November 4 in Arts at the Armory in Somerville (191 Highland Avenue). Here again, admission will be free. “Basra-Boston Connections” is one result of an Iraq-U.S. collaboration entitled The Boston-Basra Project. “Connections” combines live theater, poetry, and music on a stags that actually uses studio arts like paintings and photography to create a flexible and striking performance space. A word about Basra: [...]

17th Annual Street Festival

2016-09-22T10:38:54-04:00September 22nd, 2016|Categories: Featured, News|Comments Off on 17th Annual Street Festival

Since 2000 A.D., South Boston has been blessed with a Street Festival in September. Non-stop entertainment, many civic groups, 100 merchants, and thousands of spectators have made it into a traditional “Southie time”. Last Saturday, September 17, was no exception. The entertainment deserves special mention, including the Woods School of Irish Dance, Ultimate Self Defense, and Miss Linda’s School of Dance. A high point was the return of Thomas Park Band, a cover band that (somehow) does their own thing – putting their own unique interpretation on each number. And once again, the weather smiled. South Boston Catholic Academy News Welcome!

2016-09-15T10:11:12-04:00September 15th, 2016|Categories: Featured, News|Comments Off on South Boston Catholic Academy News Welcome!

On September 7 we welcomed our K2 to 6 grade students, families, faculty and staff to another wonderful school year of faith, family and academic excellence at South Boston Catholic Academy.  In the morning we gathered in the school yard, with our school community for morning prayer. In the classroom, Ms. McCarthy read "First Day Jitters" by Julie Danneberg to her brand new first graders. We were not expecting the surprise ending! After a class discussion, we learned that many of us had the jitters on our first day of school - including Ms. McCarthy!  We took care of that by learning a new poem called, "Jitter Juice."  Of course, we then had to make jitter juice. It was extra fun when we got to [...]

SBAA September Meeting

2016-09-15T09:52:08-04:00September 15th, 2016|Categories: News|Comments Off on SBAA September Meeting

The SBAA (South Boston Arts Association) held its monthly meeting last Saturday morning. As soon as SBAA President Dan McCole opened the meeting, it became immediately evident that community activity was a key topic. One important business item was the pursuit of a South Boston center for the arts – perhaps in one wing of the proposed new development on Summer Street, where the mothballed power plant now sits. Dan thanked Nancy Maggs for her striking poster about the mural painted by 11 SBAA artists on the Harry McDonough Sailing Center’s north. Look for yourself; it’s easily seen across Pleasure Bay. The SBAA’s new Public Relations Director, Janice Williams from Roslindale, was then introduced. Janice is pictured to the right in the photo above. She [...]

Remembering Lori Miller

2016-09-15T09:41:44-04:00September 15th, 2016|Categories: News|Comments Off on Remembering Lori Miller

As you might imagine, our memories of Lori Miller were mostly connected with the articles South Boston Online wrote about her and her incredibly valuable efforts and accomplishments  in the South Boston community.        She was a South Boston dynamo; she is already sorely missed. Born into another loyal South Boston family as Lori A. Mirisola, she had deep, deep roots here.  As sad as it was to hear of Lori’s passing, the words used in her obituary were an inspiring tribute to her life – words such as “legendary”, “cherished”, “grace and courage rarely seen”, “spirited and generous”,  “beloved, respected, and actively involved”, “richly blessed”, “always up for a new adventure”, and “paying her blessings forward”.  Every one of those words is [...]

Joe “Dodo” Nee Leaves Us

2016-09-08T10:32:36-04:00September 8th, 2016|Categories: Featured, News|Comments Off on Joe “Dodo” Nee Leaves Us

By Rick Winterson You have heard that Joseph “Dodo” Nee died this week. He fought a long and a largely successful battle against his illness, but it finally overcame him. His death is a great and very sad loss to the South Boston community. Residents of our beautiful neighborhood saw Dodo everywhere; he took part in our lives with great joy. We have chosen a photo from South Boston Online’s archives that shows Dodo (to the left) as we would like to remember him – with his friends, taking part in a fundraiser, a “Southie time” for the South Boston Collaborative Center, one of his favorite and most successful community projects.

Steven Sennett – Making Good Progress

2016-08-25T09:41:18-04:00August 25th, 2016|Categories: Featured, News|Comments Off on Steven Sennett – Making Good Progress

Perhaps you have heard of Steve Sennett.  Maybe you know him.  He’s 33, a born-and-brought-up South Bostonian, who most recently lived on East Second Street.  Steve is a devoted craftsman, too – a member for the past 15 years of Local 17, Sheet Metal Workers.  He’s a hard worker, well fitted for a craftsman’s life in the booming construction scene in and around Boston.  In his spare time, Steve enjoys camping – he’s an active and enthusiastic outdoorsman. On Sunday, June 26 – an even two months ago as you are reading this issue of South Boston Online – Steve suffered a violent, near-fatal automobile accident in New Hampshire’s White Mountains near Sculptured Rocks.  He was returning from the outdoor scenes he loved to [...]
