JOKR, an instant grocery delivery company at 301 W. Broadway, held a virtual abutters meeting Monday, Jan. Jan. 10, to discuss its plan to apply for a liquor license and got pushback from some residents and support from others.  The company, which launched in South Boston at the end of November, is looking to add alcohol delivery to its repertoire, as it does in New York. The virtual meeting drew almost 40 people. “I do not support the delivery of alcohol from this store,” said City Councilor Ed Flynn, who lives near the store and notes no residents have asked him to support this proposal. “I’m not sure if the demand is there for delivering alcohol and liquor in the neighborhood … I know it’s [...]

By Ginger DeShaney New City Councilor At-Large Erin Murphy was sworn in for the second time in a month on Monday, Jan. 3, 2022,  signaling the start of her official term. Murphy got a headstart in learning the ropes at City Hall after being sworn in on Dec. 1, 2021, to fill Mayor Michelle Wu’s at-large seat.  “It’s been exciting,” Murphy said in mid-December after her first few weeks. “I’ve been finding my way around.”  When Wu was sworn in early to finish out Marty Walsh’s term, her at-large seat from the 2019 election came open. The charter states that at-large council seats cannot go empty for any period of time, Murphy said. So, the seat was offered to the runner-up from the 2019 election, [...]

By Ginger DeShaney The wicked high tides that flooded Long Wharf and other parts of the city the weekend of Nov. 6 provided a wake-up call for Boston.  “Even though this is a natural event that we’re experiencing right now, it’s already been influenced by climate change,” said Rebecca Shoer, education and community engagement program manager for the Stone Living Lab. “We also know it’s going to keep rising. “It’s actually kind of a preview of what sea level rise might be like for Boston. Eventually this could be every single high tide.” Stone Living Lab, Boston Harbor Now, and the National Park Service hosted “Wicked High Tides” events at Long Wharf last weekend, educating people about Perigean Spring Tides and climate change. By Ginger DeShaney The banter between Lisa Walsh and Nikki McCart is easy because they’ve been friends forever. They finish each other’s sentences. They laugh a lot because, well, they are downright hilarious.  The second you are in their presence, you feel like family.  And that’s exactly how they want it.  Lisa, 41, and Nikki, 37 -- who were both born and raised in Southie -- opened MW Hair Studio at 401 W. First St. (right next to Publico) on Oct. 1 and the atmosphere is very welcoming. “The goal is to make everybody feel like they have someplace they belong,” Lisa said. “We want everyone to feel comfortable and at home and relaxed,” Nikki said. “That’s kind of the vibe we like in here.
