By Ginger DeShaney New City Councilor At-Large Erin Murphy was sworn in for the second time in a month on Monday, Jan. 3, 2022,  signaling the start of her official term. Murphy got a headstart in learning the ropes at City Hall after being sworn in on Dec. 1, 2021, to fill Mayor Michelle Wu’s at-large seat.  “It’s been exciting,” Murphy said in mid-December after her first few weeks. “I’ve been finding my way around.”  When Wu was sworn in early to finish out Marty Walsh’s term, her at-large seat from the 2019 election came open. Mayor Michelle Wu was in South Boston Sunday to light the tree at Medal of Honor Park. A huge crowd gathered to witness the event and take part in all the activities, such as pop a shot, bouncy houses and obstacles, snacks, gift bags, and so much more. In addition to Santa, Mrs. Claus, Frosty, and Rudolph, there were appearances by Paw Patrol's Chase and Marshall, Frozen's Elsa and Olaf, Toy Story's Woody and Buzz, as well as our local politicians. By Ginger DeShaney Like a good neighbor, Hilco Redevelopment Partners is there.  HRP, the owner and developer of 776 Summer St., a 1.68-million-square-foot redevelopment of the former Edison Power Plant, donated 1,000 turkeys to South Boston families in need, working in collaboration with South Boston Association of Non-Profits (SBANP) to distribute them.  “We know that the pandemic hit families really hard,” said Jasmine Sessoms, senior vice president of corporate affairs for HRP. “We don’t want to just build in neighborhoods, we want to be good neighbors. This is our way of demonstrating that we want to be a part of the community here. By Ginger DeShaney The wicked high tides that flooded Long Wharf and other parts of the city the weekend of Nov. 6 provided a wake-up call for Boston.  “Even though this is a natural event that we’re experiencing right now, it’s already been influenced by climate change,” said Rebecca Shoer, education and community engagement program manager for the Stone Living Lab. “We also know it’s going to keep rising. “It’s actually kind of a preview of what sea level rise might be like for Boston. By Ginger DeShaney Moakley Park will be bursting with color in the spring. On Saturday, Oct. 23, volunteers planted more than 880 daffodil, tulip, and allium bulbs. The plantings were part of the monthly cleanup sessions at the park.  “We want people to learn, we want people to play, we want people to be invested, we want everyone to feel like they can have a piece of Moakley,” said Jenn Meakem, Community Engagement Specialist for Boston Harbor Now. “Moakley Park is a really big priority for Boston Harbor Now and the city. People of all ages gathered at the McCormack Bath House for a beautiful afternoon of fun and exploration. Several organizations came together to help South Boston say farewell to the season: Boston Harbor Now, National Park Service, National Park Foundation, Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, City of Boston, Coalition for a Resilient and Inclusive Waterfront, Save the Harbor/Save the Bay, Piers Park Sailing Center, and Volo Sports.
