By Ginger DeShaney The Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk in South Boston today, Sept. 11, had significant meaning for those who participated. “It was one of those days in our country where everyone remembered where they were,” said runner Joe Trecarichi. “Our country stopped. Out of tragedy we found the strength to come back.” The event was all about honoring heroic first responders, he said. Courtney Sheppeck and Michelle Hynes run every Sunday, so when they heard about the Tunnel to Towers 5K, they signed up. Michelle’s husband is a first responder and she said the race was a way to honor all first responders and to remember 9/11. “I felt like I was doing something for our community,” Michelle said. Moving Season: Despite Better Timing, It’s Still a Tough Week for Locals

By Ginger DeShaney The Sept. 1 lease cycle puts a lot of pressure on our neighborhood – from clogged traffic and mounds and mounds of trash, to long lines at local businesses. But because the move-out (Aug. 31) and move-in dates fall midweek, we may have gotten a bit of a reprieve this year.  Jackie Rooney, broker/owner of Rooney Real Estate in South Boston, said some tenants couldn’t take time off during the week, so they were able to move out last weekend. “That works a little bit better in the sense that the move-out, the move-in are not all concentrated on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. It’s a little more gradual this year.” Historically, the Sept. 1 cycle was put in place in areas [...]

By Ginger DeShaney After learning that president Billy Baker was stepping down from South Boston Youth Soccer after the COVID-19 hiatus, some former players have vowed to revive the league.  When Caitlyn Murphy got the blessing from Baker to take the ball and run with it, she recruited Samantha Mackie, Michaela Colvin, and Katelyn Evans. The foursome has been busy raising money, planning, organizing, and getting paperwork and permits in order in hopes of starting the league this fall. While Baker gave the women his nets, balls, and other equipment, he didn’t feel comfortable giving them the league name, so they are calling it the South Boston Soccer League. “South Boston Youth Soccer has been a thing as long as I’ve been alive,” Caitlyn said. Community Input Informs Moakley Park Design

2022-04-01T18:00:30-04:00April 1st, 2022|Categories: Featured, Happenings, Lifestyle, News|Comments Off on Community Input Informs Moakley Park Design

By Ginger DeShaney South Boston gem Moakley Park will be getting a shiny makeover, inspired by feedback from the community. The Moakley Park Schematic Design and Phase 1 kickoff were discussed at a virtual public meeting hosted by the City of Boston’s Parks & Recreation Department last week. The proposed changes – from adding an adventure park and a community garden to creating a premier baseball field and resiliency strategies to deal with climate change – have been inspired by several years of engagement with residents and stakeholders, which has opened up opportunities in terms of planning for the park and understanding what's really important to people, said Allison Perlman, project manager with the Parks Department.  “This engagement led to the collective creation of goals [...]

The existing transportation infrastructure in the neighborhood – whether by car, transit, bike, or foot – can't handle the amount of expected growth in the South Boston Seaport District, city officials say. By 2030, the South Boston Seaport District is on track to be the second-largest employment district in the city with 89,000 jobs, said Matt Moran, transit team director of the Boston Transportation Department (BTD). And by 2030, the number of residents in the Seaport could reach approximately 31,000, matching other high-population neighborhoods in Boston.  “It's one of the fastest-growing areas within the state and possibly all of New England,” said Jim Fitzgerald, transportation planner with the Boston Planning and Development Agency (BPDA). The draft of the South Boston Seaport Strategic Transit Plan was [...]

Because South Boston is one of the most thriving neighborhoods in Boston, JOKR decided it was the perfect fit for its instant grocery delivery business.  And it is.   JOKR is offering $100.00 of your first 3 orders (Use code GET100). “Thanks to South Boston, after one month, Boston became the fastest-growing market of all the cities where JOKR operates globally,” said Tyler Trerotola, JOKR’s US CEO. “The results have been amazing, proving that betting for South Boston as the first store in Boston was the right decision.”   JOKR, located at 301 W. Broadway, opened in November.   Trerotola said South Boston’s growing population of young families and professionals appreciates what JOKR has to offer. “The access to grocery shopping in South Boston was limited, with not [...]

By Ginger DeShaney One mother’s love has sparked an online community that offers support and comfort to families with loved ones on Mass & Cass. Dawn Cobb started the Facebook page “Missing on Mass Ave” at the end of October as a group where family and friends can post about their loved ones who are believed to be missing or haven’t been heard from in the Mass Ave. area of Boston. There are already more than 6,500 members, which shows the great need for a page like this. This group is really special, said page administrator Brianna Kelley: “And it's even more special how it was formed. It just took one mother's pain and suffering and devotion to not only try to help her own [...]

JOKR, an instant grocery delivery company at 301 W. Broadway, held a virtual abutters meeting Monday, Jan. Jan. 10, to discuss its plan to apply for a liquor license and got pushback from some residents and support from others.  The company, which launched in South Boston at the end of November, is looking to add alcohol delivery to its repertoire, as it does in New York. The virtual meeting drew almost 40 people. “I do not support the delivery of alcohol from this store,” said City Councilor Ed Flynn, who lives near the store and notes no residents have asked him to support this proposal. “I’m not sure if the demand is there for delivering alcohol and liquor in the neighborhood … I know it’s [...]

By Ginger DeShaney New City Councilor At-Large Erin Murphy was sworn in for the second time in a month on Monday, Jan. 3, 2022,  signaling the start of her official term. Murphy got a headstart in learning the ropes at City Hall after being sworn in on Dec. 1, 2021, to fill Mayor Michelle Wu’s at-large seat.  “It’s been exciting,” Murphy said in mid-December after her first few weeks. “I’ve been finding my way around.”  When Wu was sworn in early to finish out Marty Walsh’s term, her at-large seat from the 2019 election came open. The charter states that at-large council seats cannot go empty for any period of time, Murphy said. So, the seat was offered to the runner-up from the 2019 election, [...]
