By KEVIN DEVLIN On Sunday Feb. 14, the Knights of Columbus annual free throw sectional contest, sponsored by the Pere Marquette chapter, was held at the Walsh Center gym. The overall winners were Mario Blasi, Kiera Lombard, Jerry O’Neil, Chris Hosea, Bobby Delaney, Sara Galvin and Emma Gillis. These Southie sectional winners will compete in the Knights of Columbus regionals to be held at Catholic Memorial High School in West Roxbury on Saturday, March 5. By KEVIN DEVLIN On Sunday, Feb. 14 at the Walsh Center gym, the Gate of Heaven CYO midget all-star game was played to the applause of proud parents and happy coaches. The 2016 Gate of Heaven CYO midget league all-star rosters for the Blue Bombers and White Warriors were Henry Gailunas, Terry Markos, Mario Blasi, Chase Bell, Steven Flynn, Dylan Picard, Nolan Baszkiewicz, Alex Polena, Ryan McDonald, Greg Matthews, Chris Hosea, Finbar Kyne and Jerry O’Neil. By KEVIN DEVLIN On Saturday, Feb. 13 at the Walsh Center gym, the two Gate of Heaven CYO intermediate basketball teams battled each other, and when the final buzzer sounded, it was Coach Bryan Van Dorpe’s boys who went home on top, 52-49. It was the Gatey blue shirts versus the Gatey white shirts for Southie bragging rights. It was a close contest for the first 10 minutes of play and with 10:27 remaining in the first half, Gatey white led by five. By KEVIN DEVLIN and SEAN MONAHAN On Super Bowl Sunday, the Gate of Heaven CYO midget house league champs were crowned at the Walsh gym, as the BiIl Linehan Club won for its third consecutive title by defeating the Blasi’s Café Club, 14-7. The Linehan Club emphasized a strong passing game on the offensive end and a tight, disciplined zone defense. The team’s passing attack was led as usual by point guard, Alex Polena, spreading the ball around. Ryan Shields, Ryan McDonald and Pat Harmon scored four points while Tristin Pecivich contributed two. South Boston’s Murphy Rink reopens

By KEVIN DEVLIN On Saturday, Feb. 6, the newly renovated Murphy Rink in South Boston was re-opened to the public. A community open house was held, along with public skating from 10 a.m. to noon, followed by two South Boston Youth Hockey Alumni Men’s League games. The rink closed in early 2015, according to a statement from the administration of Gov. Charlie Baker and Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito. The scholarship seeks to honor players who demonstrate a sense a community, dedication, integrity, humility, and character. By KEVIN DEVLIN Last Saturday, Jan. 30, at the Walsh Center gym, the fifth and sixth and the seventh and eighth grade Gate of Heaven travel teams continued on with their winning ways, as they both cruised to victory against Saint Agatha’s of Milton and Saint Ann’s of Dorchester, respectively. The younger squad has a 9-2 record and is coached by Mark Donovan, while the older boys’ team is 10-2 and is coached by Mike Alessandro and Sean Monahan. In the fifth and sixth grade game against Saint Agatha’s, Kristin Dhamo netted 14 points while slick and quick guard Conor Strickland scored 12 points. In the opening tilt, the Metro Energy Club (10-1) eked out a hard fought two-point victory, 31-29, against the Collins Club. For the Metro Club, Logan Crowley netted 17 points including three treys from downtown. Eric Pance scored five points while Matiru Mwangi contributed four points. For the Collins Club, Walter Steele scored 14 points and pulled down a handful of rebounds. Bobby “Mr. Hustle” Delaney had 10 points, including three three-pointers. Since then, commentaries from the sports media have been incessant – half of them (wrongfully) blaming everyone in sight; the other half making excuses for their forecasting the game (completely) wrong. Actually, the game unfolded simply. It was a mirror of the whole regular season. The South Boston pee-wee A hockey team played in the finals of the district championship last Wednesday night in Dorchester. They played a hard fought game versus a worthy opponent, Winthrop. The Winthrop team struck quickly in the first period and took an early 1-0 lead. With the South Boston team needing a goal to tie it up, Lydon McGarrell took the puck from his own defensive zone and rushed through center ice and fired an equalizer past the Winthrop goalie. The score remained tied 1-1 through regulation. The South Boston team continued to put pressure on Winthrop. South Boston goalie’s Joseph Hamilton remained tall in net.
