The Celtics – A Moonstruck Dynasty?

2019-02-21T14:36:07-05:00February 21st, 2019|Categories: Featured, Sports|Comments Off on The Celtics – A Moonstruck Dynasty?

by Rick Winterson      Late Sunday evening, January 20, the moon underwent a total lunar eclipse.  Because the moon was at its closest point to the Earth when the eclipse went total, because it occurred in January when wolves bay in hunger, and because the eclipsed moon became a deep orange-red, this eclipse was called a “Super Wolf Blood Moon”. Now,  we are not superstitious – certainly not!  But on Sunday, January 20, (the day of the eclipse) the Patriots won the AFC title, and then two weeks later, went on to win the NFL Super Bowl on Sunday, February 3.  Did the mojo, the karma, or the blushing vibes from that eclipse influence this outcome?  It was an outcome that firmly established the [...]

by Rick Winterson   Would you believe that a South Boston entry into the 2019 Marathon (Patriots Day, April 15), who is already running 12-minute miles over long distances really did not much care for running prior to last year?  Well, that’s the case with Maren Tober, a resident of the West Broadway Development.  Yes, Maren is running for her own satisfaction.  And also yes, Maren is running to raise funds for “YES”.  The acronym YES stands for “Youth Enrichment Services”, where her three sons – Youth Enrichment Services (or YES) is located on Massachusetts Avenue in the South End/Back Bay.  In YES’s most recent annual report, they refer to a membership of more than 1,600 young people, who were helped to experience the out-of-doors, [...]

Red Sox Nation Celebrates in Style

2018-11-17T14:25:50-05:00November 1st, 2018|Categories: Sports|Comments Off on Red Sox Nation Celebrates in Style

By Richard Campbell   This Halloween brought the Red Sox back home for the full duck boat lined parade and accompanying celebrations. The Drop Kick Murphy’s led off the celebration with their standards and a few extras.  Fans lined Boylston Street starting more than two hours in advance to get a glimpse of perhaps the most celebrated team in Red Sox history. We know some kids played hooky and skipped school for this event, but perhaps such Championship parades should be declared snow days! Some of the costumes were as entertaining as the staff and players of the Red Sox, and the nation was indeed happy to bear the chilly weather to see this moment pass.  Here’s to the 2018 Boston Red Sox World Series [...]

2018-08-02T12:20:39-04:00July 26th, 2018|Categories: Sports|Comments Off on Boston Triathlon Celebrates 10th Anniversary at Carson Beach

By Richard Campbell The 10th annual Boston Triathlon returned to Carson Beach generating its trademark excitement for spectators and participants alike, bringing thousands to South Boston.  In a reversal of last year’s event, the third annual Kid’s Day this past Saturday was blessed with sunny skies and almost ideal weather, whereas the adult main event on Sunday was forced to forgo the Olympic 1.5k Swim because of stormy weather and a small craft weather warning by harbor officials.  The choppy water aside, a little rain did not impede the Olympic run through Moakley Park or the Olympic cycle around Day Boulevard. Organized by ethos- the Boston Triathlon is primarily sponsored by the international Columbia Threadneedle Investments, with partnership support by Boston Medical Center.   Hosted at [...]

2018-08-02T14:22:49-04:00July 12th, 2018|Categories: Sports|Comments Off on Unity Cup Tournament Proudly Plays Through Weekend at Moakley

By Richard Campbell As the World Cup headed into the final elimination rounds this past weekend (July 6th to 8th) South Boston hosted the city’s own version in the inaugural Mayor’s Unity Cup Tournament.  Sixteen Boston based soccer teams were packed into Saunders Stadium representing their original home nations in three days of competitive soccer. The tournament, designed to showcase the cultural diversity and sportsmanship of American citizens from foreign lands who live in Boston, played on the stadium field gridded out in four smaller than regulation soccer fields. The tight fit made an interesting exhibit as teams were passionately pursuing the grand prize. Organized by the mayor’s office, it was sponsored by New England Revolution, Telemundo Boston, We Got Soccer, South End Soccer, Valeo [...]

Celts Rap the Raptors

2018-04-04T16:31:56-04:00April 4th, 2018|Categories: Sports|Comments Off on Celts Rap the Raptors

by Rick Winterson The Boston Celtics occupy a solid second place in the NBA’s Eastern Conference. They were on a streak – six games in a row as of last weekend. They are in the top four of the entire NBA. They had been three games behind the Toronto Raptors. After Saturday’s 110-99 rapping of the Raptors at the TD Garden, the Celts were just two down in the East. This is with three injured starters out for long periods – Haywood, Irving, and Smart – along with bench backups Daniel Theis and Shane Larkin. Still, five of the remaining Celts hit double figured Saturday night, three of them making 20+ points – Marcus Morris (25), Jayson Tatum (24), and Terry Rozier (21). Led by [...]
