In Defense of Defense

by Rick Winterson      It bears repeating that the Patriots’ defense was the target of much criticism during the 2016 regular season.  But it bears repeating only to demonstrate how senseless the boo-birds have been all season long.  This writer guesses that they got tired of criticizing the Presidential campaign, or simply got crowded out of that particular issue by all the partisan tweets.    There was a school of thought that the “Points Against” statistic, where the Pats led the entire NFL – yes, both Conferences – was somehow meaningless, because the Pats played a lot of weak teams.  Well, whether that’s true or not, the Pats’ Points Against figures demonstrate the value of their defense in both playoff games – 17 Points [...]

So What Now? Wait ‘til …

2016-10-13T11:27:53-04:00October 13th, 2016|Categories: Featured, Sports|Comments Off on So What Now? Wait ‘til …

It was something of a shock to see the Red Sox succumb to Terry Francona’s Cleveland Indians in three games.  “Something of a shock?”  Well, Cleveland had a slightly better regular season record and an identifiably better bullpen going in.  In those three games, we saw the Indians outscore the Sox 15 to 7 – more than double Boston’s output.  And the Red Sox’ combined ERA for these three games was 5.00.  So, what could we expect? Briefly, the plague of inconsistency that bothered the Red Sox most of this summer returned with a vengeance in October. And it was a bittersweet departure for David Ortiz, who is one of the few athletes to retire while still at the very top of his game, even [...]

2016-08-18T11:49:29-04:00August 18th, 2016|Categories: Featured, Sports|Comments Off on Tynan Fun in the Sun Wiffleball Classic

By: Joey Maiullari (Jr.Camp counselor) On a warm, sunny day in South Boston, the campers at the local Tynan Fun in the Sun program used the heat to their own advantage. They originally planned to play a quick four –on-four game, but once one of them realized they had a rope in their backpack, they thought it would be a great way to make a field. On the side of the Tynan, across from the Gate of Heaven church, the campers began to think of ideas to perfect their new ballpark. Across the whole concrete field, ropes outlined the foul poles, along with the fences for homeruns. In addition to that, there were ropes that represented the audience in different parts of the ballpark. On [...]
