Looking ahead: How the Super Bowl may show what will happen next season

2016-02-26T13:48:27-05:00February 24th, 2016|Categories: Sports|Tags: |Comments Off on Looking ahead: How the Super Bowl may show what will happen next season

By RICK WINTERSON Yes, yes, we know Super Bowl 50 is long since over. The Bruins and the Celts are both playing well; the Sox are at Fenway South in Fort Myers, and John Farrell is back. And SB 50 was, well, really just another Super Bowl. Obviously, the Patriots’ absence was a downer around here, but No. 50 was unexciting no matter who played (at Seapoint, it was termed “lackluster”). Except for Denver’s defense; please take note of that. We’ll find out next fall if dominant defense continues to be a key NFL factor. Oddly enough, the Panthers dominated the offensive stats – total yards (+121), first downs (+11) and time of possession (+5:34). But they committed more turnovers – four to two by [...]

Medicine Wheel Productions celebrates its 25th anniversary

2016-02-18T15:54:52-05:00February 17th, 2016|Categories: Business, Happenings|Tags: |Comments Off on Medicine Wheel Productions celebrates its 25th anniversary

By RICK WINTERSON South Boston Online writer Rick Winterson is a member of the Medicine Wheel board. Back in 1991, the basic aim/goal/mission/philosophy/whatever of Medicine Wheel Productions occurred to Michael Dowling, Medicine Wheel’s founder, artistic director, and artist in his own right. Stated simply, Michael realized the connection between the community and its art. Medicine Wheel’s basic idea is stated in the clause, “Building Community Through Art.” Well, 2016 equals 1991 plus 25 years. Medicine Wheel Production is celebrating its silver anniversary this year. Big plans and great celebrations will make this a memorable anniversary year. There are a number of events planned, but three stand out in particular. The first is a Medicine Wheel fundraiser called “Turning the Wheel” on Thursday, June 16, as [...]

South Boston Branch Library hosts book sale

2016-12-12T03:02:02-05:00February 17th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Tags: |Comments Off on South Boston Branch Library hosts book sale

No, it wasn’t quite Valentine’s Day yet. Even so, the Feb. 13 Branch Library Book Sale was a love fest.  The book sale, sponsored and run by the Friends of the South Boston Branch Library, raised funds for various Branch Library activities, such as kids’ programs and refreshments (unbudgeted) at various Branch Library events. And, yes, it was filled with love. Intrepid members of the Friends actually sold books outside in the rapidly plunging temperatures (“Greater love hath no man…”), and students from Excel High School sold water bottles to finance their next good-works trip to Malawi. Not only does the book sale get fine reading and listening into the hands of the South Boston public, it’s a legitimate form of recycling. The volunteer book [...]

Police Commissioner Evans: ‘A man for Boston’

2016-02-18T15:55:50-05:00February 17th, 2016|Categories: Featured, Happenings|Tags: |Comments Off on Police Commissioner Evans: ‘A man for Boston’

The Paraclete has chosen well. Its 2016 honoree, “A Man for Boston,” is William Evans, the City of Boston’s Police Commissioner. Athlete, family man, lifelong South Bostonian and career police officer, he epitomizes what effective law enforcement is all about. Join us in honoring Evans at the Paraclete’s Annual Reception, Wednesday, Feb. 24. By RICK WINTERSON Boston’s Police Commissioner William B. Evans will be honored by the Paraclete during the Annual Reception on Wednesday evening, Feb. 24, at Boston College High School (150 Morrissey Boulevard, in Dorchester). The ceremony that will honor Evans is entitled “A Man for Boston.” Except for one year in college, Evans is a lifelong resident of South Boston. His upbringing in a three-decker on East Sixth Street is a fine example [...]

Editorial: Questions about the proposed Grand Prix need to be answered

2018-11-27T13:06:37-05:00February 17th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Tags: , |Comments Off on Editorial: Questions about the proposed Grand Prix need to be answered

By RICK WINTERSON The proposed Grand Prix of Boston, which has a course of a over two-and-a-half miles around the South Boston Waterfront, has many questions remaining. These must be answered soon. While we are entirely open to major spectator events coming to Boston and South Boston, South Boston Online has a negative opinion about IndyCar races and their presence at Grand Prix of Boston, which is actually located entirely within the confines of the South Boston Waterfront – and within those confines over the next five years. This opinion is simply stated: We don’t think Grand Prix racing fits us – either our city or our neighborhood. And that’s not because we are against major events. The city of Boston is the finish line [...]

Boston Redevelopment Authority considers rezoning South Boston

2016-02-18T15:56:38-05:00February 17th, 2016|Categories: News|Tags: |Comments Off on Boston Redevelopment Authority considers rezoning South Boston

The Boston Redevelopment Authority is marshaling its resources for a new, fresh and careful look at zoning rules, as they apply to South Boston. Rezoning is obviously a critical project affecting our community’s future. Plan to attend the BRA’s first overall rezoning meeting on Monday evening, Feb. 29, at the Tynan School from 6 to 7:30 p.m. By RICK WINTERSON Mark McGonagle is employed by the Boston Redevelopment Authority as its Community Affairs Liaison for zoning. Because of that responsibility, along with his South Boston roots, Mark has been asked by the BRA to spearhead a rezoning project that will include over half of South Boston. This project will include most of what we’ll call “the South Boston residential areas.” These areas extend along and to [...]

“On the Line” opens at Spoke Gallery

2016-02-10T16:43:03-05:00February 10th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Tags: |Comments Off on “On the Line” opens at Spoke Gallery

Medicine Wheel Production’s SPOKE Gallery (110 K Street, second floor) debuts another exhibition curated by Kathy Bitetti, the gallery’s chief curator. The central theme is artists who live or work along the original Fairmount Indigo commuter train line that once served South Boston. This line now runs from Readville in Hyde Park to South Boston. “Boston, like a living organism, is always changing and connecting, meeting new challenges,” reads a description of the exhibition on Medicine Wheel Production’s website. “The MBTA’s Fairmount-Indigo commuter rail line, despite the poetic draw of its name, was the least traveled and maintained of all the routes out of and into South Boston. Renewed interest and investment are now revitalizing this line, which connects lively Boston neighborhoods once separated from [...]

Presidential politics: Only nine months to go

2018-11-27T13:06:37-05:00February 10th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Tags: |Comments Off on Presidential politics: Only nine months to go

By RICK WINTERSON There has been a lot of comment about the 2016 presidential race. The voters mostly claim they’ve never seen anything like it. South Boston Online believes there are a few key reasons for this. First, the campaign for president has already gone on far too long.  It has stretched all the way from last summer, and will continue much more intensely for another nine full months. There have been so many candidates (some, pseudo-candidates) that all the endorsements, speeches and ads have seemed like endless, meaningless chatter. They began repeating themselves as far back as Thanksgiving. Second, the winner of the race for president has likely been determined. Just look at the New Hampshire primaries held Tuesday, Feb. 9 - and while [...]

The first real snowfall

2016-02-10T14:06:00-05:00February 10th, 2016|Categories: Happenings, News|Tags: |Comments Off on The first real snowfall

Just days after Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring, the first substantial snowfall arrived on Friday, Feb. 5. It was heavy and wet. Snow clung everywhere, especially to tree branches. It was strangely beautiful, except to those seeking a place to park. The weather folks said it was 8 inches worth, but South Boston Online really doubts that much fell here. Compared to last year’s dumping, the first snow of 2016 was nothing to write home about. The storm had the good taste to come just before a weekend. The city had the wisdom to call off school, and the roads were restored to traffic with all due haste, so we were prepared for the next storm. -Rick Winterson
