Memorial Weekend, 2016

2016-06-03T12:30:12-04:00June 3rd, 2016|Categories: News|Tags: |Comments Off on Memorial Weekend, 2016

Memorial Day observances in South Boston actually stretched over four days, making it into a very full weekend of remembrance. This is appropriate: Memorial Day (originally called “Decoration Day”) began 150 years ago in Waterloo in upstate New York – a key stop on the North’s Underground Railway. On Friday morning, the Fallen Heroes (Iraq, Afghanistan) Memorial was dedicated on a plot of ground within John Hynes’ Seaport Square mega-development. This Memorial consists of a simple but stately pentagonal obelisk, representing the five American combat arms. At its base, there’s a reflecting pool and steps, in and around which bright flowers were left. The Fallen Heroes Memorial is a result of dedicated volunteer efforts by local firefighters, police officers, Gold Star families, and veterans. One [...]

“Business Spring Fling” at Eastern Bank

2016-06-03T13:52:35-04:00June 3rd, 2016|Categories: Business, Happenings|Tags: |Comments Off on “Business Spring Fling” at Eastern Bank

It was simultaneously an event, a reception, and a celebration at the South Boston Branch of Eastern Bank last Wednesday evening, May 25.  Specifically, it was an evening to pay tribute to the strength of small businesses all across America – both locally and nationwide.  May is “Small Business Month”; Mayor Walsh had previously paid tribute to the strength of Boston’s small businesses by publicly stating that they provide 170,000 jobs in the City of Boston.  It was a real “Small Business Spring Fling”. In the commendably brief program, Eastern Bank Branch Manager Michele Hart welcomed her guests.  She reflected back on the six years she has served as Eastern Bank’s South Boston Branch Manager, focusing on the value of small businesses here, and [...]

The Lawn on D opens for its third season

2016-05-25T12:09:45-04:00May 25th, 2016|Categories: News|Tags: |Comments Off on The Lawn on D opens for its third season

By RICK WINTERSON It’s time for compliments, resulting from the opening day of the Lawn on D on Saturday, May 21, for the summer of 2016. But the biggest compliment that can be paid to the Lawn on D is the presence of the crowd that more than eagerly anticipated the lawn’s first day of its summer season. Families came and went, but it seemed that 500 or more were on hand for the entire time. Equal numbers of adults and kids mobbed the Lawn on D’s patented crescent swings – selfies were encouraged. The youngsters enjoyed a bubble bath filled with light plastic balls. They jumped onto and then rode inflatables of all kinds. There were miniature houses, crawl spaces, and hidey-holes everywhere. South Boston Collaborative Center will honor two citizens at awards night

2016-05-25T12:09:10-04:00May 25th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Tags: |Comments Off on South Boston Collaborative Center will honor two citizens at awards night

By RICK WINTERSON The South Boston Collaborative Center, located where the Washington Village Branch Library once was at 1226A Columbia Road, is a pillar of South Boston. Briefly stated, the Collaborative lends a hand – both professionally and compassionately – to anyone in the throes of an addiction, whether it’s from drugs, alcohol, prescription medicines, or any other form of substance abuse. What’s most important of all, the Collaborative renders its services confidentially and anonymously. The Collaborative was founded almost 20 years ago, in 1997. This was in response to an epidemic of teen suicides related to drug abuse at that time. And the Collaborative was successful. But to succeed, an effort like the Collaborative needs the work and support of many community members. Every [...]

By RICK WINTERSON Describe it however you want: The renowned “Southie time” not only raises money in support of countless people and worthy causes, it also becomes a marvelously enjoyable event in the process. The “Southie time” is a true social phenomenon. This particular “Southie time” is called “A Bike Ride for Mark’s New Ride” and is happening right now. The story began tragically in 2013, when Mark Delamere was only 14 years old. He was in a horrible car accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Despite being wheelchair bound, Mark was not one to hang back. He enrolled in Motivated Fitness (315 West Broadway), where he has worked out at least twice a week ever since his accident. East Boston Savings Bank business breakfast celebrates bank, city, local businesses

2016-05-18T13:45:56-04:00May 18th, 2016|Categories: Business|Tags: |Comments Off on East Boston Savings Bank business breakfast celebrates bank, city, local businesses

By RICK WINTERSON On Tuesday morning, May 17, East Boston Savings Bank added another chapter to what has become a tradition in South Boston and beyond – well beyond. Some years ago, before its consolidation with EBSB, Ed Merritt of the then Mt. Washington Bank began having business breakfasts that informed the local business public of the bank’s progress during the past year. Dick Gavegnano, the chairman, president and CEO of EBSB, liked what Merritt was doing and decided to continue this tradition after EBSB merged with Mt. Washington. The Venezia Restaurant in Port Norfolk on the Neponset River estuary was the business breakfast’s 2016 locale. Venezia is located centrally to the many branches that EBSB now has in various business and customer centers around [...]

Phil Wuschke, a veteran, called South Boston Online to alert us to the planned Memorial Day observance on South Boston’s Dorchester Heights. Mass, to be followed by appropriate Memorial Day ceremonies, will begin at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 30. Memorial Day began as “Decoration Day” 150 years ago in 1866. Its observance is a historically important American custom, which remembers the ultimate sacrifice paid by those military veterans who died in combat. The public is invited. See you there. -Rick Winterson

South Boston resident provides water bowls for neighborhood pets

2016-05-18T13:44:58-04:00May 18th, 2016|Categories: News|Tags: |Comments Off on South Boston resident provides water bowls for neighborhood pets

By RICK WINTERSON Did you ever think of South Boston as being mostly a desert? Well, it is. Certainly, it rains here, but almost all of the storm water drains away quickly, with only a few puddles temporarily left behind. Otherwise, there is little or no fresh water anywhere out of doors. In other words, South Boston is normally a desert, and that can be hard on our cats, dogs and other pets. Well, Chris Gregorio, who lives in the Msgr. Powers apartments at 120 L St., decided he would do something about this. He has begun to set out water bowls, sometimes on one of his blankets when the wind is calm. He only asks that you sign your pet in – some 60 [...]

East Broadway resident performs at Quincy’s Curtain Call Theater

2016-05-18T13:43:55-04:00May 18th, 2016|Categories: News|Tags: |Comments Off on East Broadway resident performs at Quincy’s Curtain Call Theater

By RICK WINTERSON That’s Lorie Walsh of Broadway in South Boston, of course – East Broadway on the eastern slope of “Pill Hill,” to be exact. Lorie has just completed a run at Braintree’s Curtain Call Theater, where she performed as Felicity in Michael Cristofer’s gripping play, “The Shadow Box,” directed by Peter Kates. Many of Lorie’s friends from South Boston drove down to the Curtain Call stage to see her in that very challenging role. “The Shadow Box” debuted 40 years ago. It deals frankly – sometimes sadly, sometimes humorously – with the hospice movement and the inevitability of death. Even now, our society tends to wall off the experience of death, rather than facing (and eventually accepting) it directly. Almost two generations after [...]

A Memorial Day weekend reminder

2016-05-18T13:43:23-04:00May 18th, 2016|Categories: News|Tags: |Comments Off on A Memorial Day weekend reminder

By RICK WINTERSON South Boston Online mentioned 2016 Memorial Day observances at the Fitzgerald VFW Post No. 561 (VFW, 517 East Fourth St.) in our last issue. This is a brief reminder of those observances; as always, the public is cordially invited to attend and take part. The ceremonies at the Fitzgerald Post will take place on Sunday, May 29. They begin with an assembly and breakfast collation in the Post at 9 a.m. At 9:30, the Post members and their guests will march to Medal of Honor (M Street) Park, where there will be a solemn wreath laying at the Vietnam Memorial. After the ceremonies, members and guests will return to the Post for a complimentary lunch. Please plan to join us – see [...]
