By RICK WINTERSON UMass Boston has held an annual community breakfast as part of its communications mission since 1987. This year was the 30th such community gathering. It was an upbeat, enjoyable event, which took place in the main dining room of the UMass Boston Campus Center. Several hundred attendees from all over Boston – especially Dorchester and South Boston – showed up. The UMass Boston campus, while in Dorchester, looks out onto South Boston from its vantage point on Columbia Point, next to the Kennedy Library and Kennedy Senate Building. First up in the program was the Paige Academy Drum Troupe, led by well-known local musician Joe Cook. They gave a stirring performance that elicited a standing ovation.  Introductory remarks were made by Philip Carver, [...]

Mayor Martin J. Walsh announced Tuesday he is dispatching 15 Public Works Department trucks to repair potholes across the city. The combination of freezing temperatures, a thaw and precipitation make roads especially susceptible to defects. The mayor is encouraging residents to report potholes through any of the city’s several different platforms, including: Mobile: Download the free BOS:311 app on iOS or Android (previously known as Citizens Connect) Online: Boston.gov/311 Social Media: Tweet @BOS311 Phone: Dial 3-1-1 (previously the Mayor’s 24-hour hotline 617-635-4500. For those with VoIP and for calls from outside Boston, callers should continue to dial 617-635-4500.) -Press release from the mayor’s office

April opening for Roza Lyons

2016-04-06T15:12:56-04:00April 6th, 2016|Categories: Business|Tags: |Comments Off on April opening for Roza Lyons

A new logo for Roza Lyons has been placed on the signage at 709 East Broadway. It’s punctuated with a line drawing combining a white rose with a lion en passant sinistre. The white rose could symbolize the English House of York, except that “Roza” is the Polish spelling of “rose.” And even though lions are symbols of the English monarchy, Lyon is the name a major city located on the Rhone River in France. Go figure. Roza Lyons is where the Urban Art Bar used to be (it’s now in Brookline). Roza Lyons will be a new restaurant and bar. Its website, which is still limited in details, describes Roza Lyons as “a great restaurant and bar featuring an excellent selection of craft beer [...]

Opinion: If you want peace, prepare for war

2018-11-27T13:06:36-05:00April 6th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Comments Off on Opinion: If you want peace, prepare for war

By KEVIN DEVLIN America is definitely in retreat on the world stage due to the fact that President Barrack Obama does not believe in American exceptionalism and lacks the willpower to defend red lines in the sand. Those on opposite sides of the aisle in Washington present contrary views about the present state of our military preparedness. It’s tough to tell who is telling the truth about who supports or is against military cuts; they point the finger at each other. Clearly, a diminished military and the inability of our current president to act when necessary isn’t in our best national interest. Increased international turmoil is linked with America’s “failure of will.” Our enemies see our inaction as a sign of weakness, that America does [...]

South Connect to play at Hard Rock Cafe Boston

2016-04-06T15:09:25-04:00April 6th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Comments Off on South Connect to play at Hard Rock Cafe Boston

Southie Connect, a local band formed in South Boston, will be playing at the Hard Rock Cafe Boston for the first time this Saturday. “We’re stepping up the ladder,” said Jimmy Donovan, the band’s singer. “We want everybody to show their support by coming.” The band, which has been together for about two years, has five members: Donovan; Bobby Travis, guitar; Paul Eaton, bass; Phil Beach, harmonica; and Robert Kinsherf, drums. The band has played at other well recognized venues in the city, Donovan said, such as Copperfield’s Bar and the House of Blues Boston, but this is their first time at the Hard Rock. “We need support,” Donovan said. “We want to prove we can pack the place.” The band is one of five [...]

Reminiscing about “Dirty Old Boston” at South Boston Historical Society meeting

2016-03-30T16:12:21-04:00March 30th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Comments Off on Reminiscing about “Dirty Old Boston” at South Boston Historical Society meeting

By RICK WINTERSON The South Boston Historical Society held its meeting on Monday. The guest speaker was Jim Botticelli, who assembled, created and wrote “Dirty Old Boston.” This is a lengthy photographic journey through the City of Boston during four decades, from the end of World War II through 1987, when the current mega-reconstruction first put down its roots. Said reconstruction was watered and fertilized by the original, authoritarian Boston Redevelopment Authority. The West End demolition actually came years after the first demo of the so-called “New York Streets” in the South End. Only Albany Street remains. Botticelli’s book (284 pages) came out less than two years ago, but is already in its second, 7,000 copy printing. The majority of the photographs in “Dirty Old Boston” [...]

Faithful gather for Easter sunrise service on Castle Island

2016-03-30T14:55:59-04:00March 30th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Tags: |Comments Off on Faithful gather for Easter sunrise service on Castle Island

By RICK WINTERSON At 6:34 on Easter morning, sunlight first peered through a low, gray layer of stratus clouds, although the solar orb could not be seen. The tide was high, and it was cold. Temperatures were in the 30s, and were made piercing by a light breeze. A crowd of perhaps as many as 2,000 had gathered for Easter worship on Castle Island, on the northeast rampart of Fort Independence facing the Donald McKay obelisk. At the moment of sunrise, Fr. Robert Casey, the pastor of South Boston’s St. Brigid Parish, began the 2016 Sunrise Easter Mass with an opening hymn, “Morning Has Broken.” Sunrise Mass on Castle Island has been a tradition here for many decades; it is always well attended by the faithful.
