Following the announcement at the end of February that this year's St. Patrick's Day and Evacuation Day parade did not receive approval from the city for its intended and traditional three-mile route, South Boston Online readers reacted with speed and strong words. South Boston Citizens’ Association President Tom McGrath is pleased to announce that Kevin Ryan has been chosen to receive the John W. McCormack Award at the South Boston Citizens’ Association’s 136th Annual Evacuation Day Banquet, March 18. “It is an honor for the association to present this award to Kevin for his countless contributions to the betterment of South Boston, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the United States for well over 30 years,” McGrath said. By KEVIN DEVLIN In celebration of Evacuation week festivities in South Boston, on Sunday, March 6, enthusiastic bowlers journeyed up to the South Boston Bowlarama on East Broadway to enjoy an afternoon of bowling and fun with friends. This annual bowling event, free to the adult-public, is sponsored by the South Boston Citizens’ Association. Representatives from the association - Cheryl Joyce, Andrea Flaherty, Rich DeVoe, and Pauline Bare -were present coordinating this adult event that was free to those who attended. Bowling alley times were donated by Bowlarama. The beer was free and donated by Coors Light, Miller Light and Bud Light. Free pizza was also thrown in to keep the bowlers happy and energetic.

Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg joined Boston Police Commissioner William Evans in honoring Officer John Moynihan, who survived being shot in the line of duty last year, with the Hero’s Award at the Boston Police Foundation’s Annual Gala at the Westin Waterfront Hotel in Boston. Wahlberg and Berg are frequent collaborators with such films as “Lone Survivor,” the upcoming Deepwater Horizon and they are about to enter production on “Patriots Day,” a film that will focus on the heroics of many in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings. By KEVIN DEVLIN On Monday evening, March 7, the annual Evacuation week free throw competition, sponsored by the South Boston Citizens’ Association and the Tynan Community Center, was held at the Tynan gymnasium. Tynan Program Supervisor Kathy Davis and her staff coordinated the event and Tynan Administrative Coordinator John Lydon photographed the event. Former mayor of Boston and ambassador to the Vatican Ray Flynn was present to help out, along with South Boston Citizens’ Association members Bernard O’Donnell and his son, Bernard. Last Saturday evening, March 5, the Gate of Heaven CYO girl’s high school age team lost at Catholic Memorial High School in the semi-finals of the State CYO tournament. But the girls had a great time playing and being with their friends off and on the court. It’s the season: the 2016 paraders gathered at the Thomas J. Fitzgerald Post, VFW No. 561, on Fourth Street last Saturday afternoon. The occasion was a fundraising event in support of the St. Patrick’s/Evacuation Day Parade. As you can see, it was a jam-packed, standing room only event. Among those who greeted the many guests were the brothers Mullen, Jim and John, Post Commander Ed Flynn, and Tommy Florentino, the Fitzy Post’s trumpeter extraordinaire. When you go there next, be sure to take a good, long look at the murals refurbished and recreated by local artist Norm Crump. -Rick Winterson

Monday is Pool Day for our After School Program and these girls love it! They will be diving in for our star swim team, the Lobsters, in a few short years! The pool is not the only thing buzzing at the Condon. Stop in, say hello to our friendly staff and check out our other gym and computer lab programs. Also, please note that the “City Hall to Go” Truck is visiting this Thursday, March 10, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in our lobby. Gate of Heaven boys team wins CYO Vicariate Tournament Championship

By KEVIN DEVLIN On Sunday, March 7, at Saint Agatha’s school gymnasium in Milton, the Gate of Heaven CYO fifth and sixth grade boys’ travel team defeated Saint Agatha’s of Milton, 27-14, to capture the CYO Vicariate Tournament Championship. Gatey took an early 9-2 lead and led at the half, 11-6. In the second half, Gatey went on a 9-5 run to take a 20-11 lead and went home with the championship medals and trophy. For Gatey, Conor Strickland was unstoppable as he netted 13 points, including one three-pointer from downtown. Max Hogan blocked two shots, had a handful of rebounds and scored six points. By KEVIN DEVLIN On Saturday, March 5, at the Walsh Center gym, the Gate of Heaven CYO instructional league and the John “Injun” Horan Memorial Girls’ House League held their end of the season all-star games. In the opening tilt, the instructional league all-stars, the Red Raiders defeated the Blue Bombers 12-6. In the John “Injun” Horan Girls’ League all-star game, the Blue Birds eked out a hard fought victory against the White Wonders, 35-33. In the opening minutes of the first half, the Blue Birds took an early 8-2 lead. The White Wonders responded and went on an 8-0 run to take the lead, 10-8. The game was tied up, 14-14, at the half.
