Open Skate at Murphy Rink

The Murphy Rink in South Boston is open for public skating until March 20 as part of the DCR’s program.  South Boston Online stopped by on a recent Sunday morning to check it out.  A group from East Boston was having a blast on the small rink while South Boston Youth Hockey games were being played on the large rink. The Eastie parents had been looking for a rink that was open in the morning – before naptime – and saw Murphy Rink offered that. Mayor Michelle Wu today announced a cold weather advisory in response to the bitterly cold temperatures expected tonight and this weekend.  Boston is forecasted to experience wind chills as low as zero overnight tonight into Saturday, January 22. This follows a wind chill of below zero Thursday night into Friday. Mayor Wu is advising residents to take precautions, reminding them to check in on older adults, people with disabilities, and people experiencing homelessness. If you see an individual experiencing homelessness and vulnerable individuals out in the cold who appear immobile, disoriented, or underdressed for the cold, please call 911. 2022 St. Patrick’s/Evacuation Day Parade Plans Underway

The South Boston Allied War Veterans Council – abbreviated here to “SBAWVC” – has already begun planning for the 2022 St. Patrick’s/Evacuation Day Parade.  St. Patrick’s Day and Evacuation Day occur on Thursday, March 17, this year, and as usual, the 2022 Parade will take place on the Sunday closest to St. Patrick’s Day.  So, on the afternoon of Sunday, March 20, this year’s Parade will step off promptly at 1 p.m. from the intersection of Dorchester Avenue and West Broadway, and will march along a route that has been submitted to the City of Boston for formal approval.  If approved, the Parade will proceed along Broadway to P Street, march up to Dorchester Heights, and then disband in Andrew Square.  The proposed Parade route [...]

By Ginger DeShaney The Department of Conservation and Recreation and BSC Design Group held a public meeting Wednesday night to present their design – inspired by neighborhood kids – for improvements to the Michael Joyce Memorial Playground at Marine Park.  Residents and elected officials expressed concern that the meeting was not widely advertised, therefore many people didn’t know about it. DCR officials pledged to improve outreach and notification for the next public meeting in March. JOKR, an instant grocery delivery company at 301 W. Broadway, held a virtual abutters meeting Monday, Jan. Jan. 10, to discuss its plan to apply for a liquor license and got pushback from some residents and support from others.  The company, which launched in South Boston at the end of November, is looking to add alcohol delivery to its repertoire, as it does in New York. Murphy got a headstart in learning the ropes at City Hall after being sworn in on Dec. 1, 2021, to fill Mayor Michelle Wu’s at-large seat.  “It’s been exciting,” Murphy said in mid-December after her first few weeks. “I’ve been finding my way around.”  When Wu was sworn in early to finish out Marty Walsh’s term, her at-large seat from the 2019 election came open. People of all ages took the traditional dip at M Street Beach Saturday morning to ring in the new year. While not an official L Street Brownies-sanctioned event this year (the bath house is still being renovated), people were encouraged to swim and record themselves. A very enthusiastic crowd gathered. The teens, all fully vaccinated, spearheaded a video/social media project to encourage other teens to get vaccinated after discovering that many of their peers and classmates were still not vaccinated against the virus. Michael Indresano, of Indresano Productions donated his studio time and talent to help the teens bring their vision to reality. Mayor Michelle Wu was in South Boston Sunday to light the tree at Medal of Honor Park. A huge crowd gathered to witness the event and take part in all the activities, such as pop a shot, bouncy houses and obstacles, snacks, gift bags, and so much more. In addition to Santa, Mrs. Claus, Frosty, and Rudolph, there were appearances by Paw Patrol's Chase and Marshall, Frozen's Elsa and Olaf, Toy Story's Woody and Buzz, as well as our local politicians.
