By Ginger DeShaney New City Councilor At-Large Erin Murphy was sworn in for the second time in a month on Monday, Jan. 3, 2022,  signaling the start of her official term. Murphy got a headstart in learning the ropes at City Hall after being sworn in on Dec. 1, 2021, to fill Mayor Michelle Wu’s at-large seat.  “It’s been exciting,” Murphy said in mid-December after her first few weeks. “I’ve been finding my way around.”  When Wu was sworn in early to finish out Marty Walsh’s term, her at-large seat from the 2019 election came open. The charter states that at-large council seats cannot go empty for any period of time, Murphy said. So, the seat was offered to the runner-up from the 2019 election, [...]

People of all ages took the traditional dip at M Street Beach Saturday morning to ring in the new year. While not an official L Street Brownies-sanctioned event this year (the bath house is still being renovated), people were encouraged to swim and record themselves. A very enthusiastic crowd gathered. To really pump up the fun, the Greater Boston Firefighters Pipes and Drums corp paraded to the beach from L Street Tavern. Happy New Year! (Photos by Ginger DeShaney)

By Ginger DeShaney Pride. Honor. Respect. Leadership. The cadets of South Boston JROTC exude these qualities.  And when we see these young leaders at events and ceremonies, presenting color guards or providing escorts, we can’t help but feel proud of them and our neighborhood. “It’s helping the community and giving the community something to be proud of,” C/MAJ George Infante, a senior at Excel High School, said about the cadets’ involvement in events. “We are doing these things to inspire people,” said LTC (R) Anthony Hinson, who has been with the South Boston JROTC at Excel for seven years and leads the cadets with SFC (R) George Machado. The cadets recently participated in a flag raising at UMass-Boston on Pearl Harbor Day and the opening [...]

Coming Into Focus: Photographer Tells Stories Through A Different Lens

2021-12-04T09:04:16-05:00December 4th, 2021|Categories: Business, Featured, Happenings, Lifestyle|Comments Off on Coming Into Focus: Photographer Tells Stories Through A Different Lens

By Ginger DeShaney John McCosh is a storyteller.  But he doesn’t use words to tell stories … he uses his camera, living by his philosophy of photo “fabula” (Russian for “story”).  “Photography is kind of like a poem,” said the owner of South Boston’s LightFlex Studios in the Distillery Gallery at 516 E. 2nd St., Suite 104. “Whatever you get with a poem, you can get with a picture. A thousand words for a picture, I would say make it 80 words and make it poetry.” And every good story includes people. When John first started out, he was focusing on landscapes. “But you know what? People are the story,” he said. “The more you can get a human, relatable moment, the more it's going [...]

By Ginger DeShaney  Sixteen outstanding South Boston students were awarded $2,000 grants from the South Boston Sports Hall of Fame Scholarship Trust Fund on Nov. 26. “It’s been an incredibly difficult last 20 months for everybody,” ceremony emcee and Trustee John Beatty said at the Walsh Gym. People have been affected in different ways, he said: “Some with physical hardship or illness, in some cases losing family members; businesses have been impacted, jobs have been impacted, family lives have been impacted. Our students’ have been impacted ... “We hope that this scholarship is a shining light in these students’ lives.”  In addition to the scholarship winners, John mentioned that the applicants who didn’t get scholarships were also exceptional students. “I found new inspiration for what’s [...]

By Ginger DeShaney Like a good neighbor, Hilco Redevelopment Partners is there.  HRP, the owner and developer of 776 Summer St., a 1.68-million-square-foot redevelopment of the former Edison Power Plant, donated 1,000 turkeys to South Boston families in need, working in collaboration with South Boston Association of Non-Profits (SBANP) to distribute them.  “We know that the pandemic hit families really hard,” said Jasmine Sessoms, senior vice president of corporate affairs for HRP. “We don’t want to just build in neighborhoods, we want to be good neighbors. This is our way of demonstrating that we want to be a part of the community here. Tell us what you need; we want to help out.” Jasmine said her company has donated 4,000 turkeys this year: 1,000 in [...]

Missing Ingredients: BPL Donation Initiative Looks to Spice Up Local Food Pantries

By Ginger DeShaney They say variety is the spice of life, but you’d be hard-pressed to find any spices in a food pantry. Stephanie Chace, nutritional literacy coordinator for Boston Public Library and organizer of its Spice Bank Collective, is on a mission to change that.  “It’s an idea I’ve carried with me for a very long time, probably 8 or 10 years,” she said. “Whenever I would see a call-out for a food pantry for people to donate, you would see the list of things that most pantries were looking for; nonperishables was ultimately the final message. Bring canned goods, bring boxed mac and cheese, and I was always kind of struck that spices, which are nonperishables, were never listed. “So that always stuck [...]
