By now, you will have heard that Harry Uhlman has passed from us. At 87, Harry had lived a long and very good life – a life that he devoted to others, especially to those others he called “Special Kids”.  He was a true Angel to those kids (and young adults), but he was also a humble man.  Whenever you mentioned Harry’s devotion to them, he would immediately reply, “Hey, that’s what friends are for!” The freshly renewed Marine Park Bandstand was dedicated to Harry in September of 2018.  Perhaps even more meaningful than the bronze plaque that marked the Bandstand’s dedication were the comments from those attending:  In describing Harry’s many good works, Jack Hart quoted Mother Teresa – “We can’t all do big [...]

Hello Southie neighbors, The way that South Boston's main streets are set up today make it easy for drivers to drive dangerously, creating unsafe conditions for pedestrians. I was hit by a car as a pedestrian walking in the crosswalk in Southie last February and am frustrated by what I see as car-centered traffic management here. Car drivers have a sense of entitlement to the road that makes walking around the neighborhood treacherous in some places. Fortunately, there are several streets that can be quickly, easily, and inexpensively made safer if our elected officials know that there's neighborhood support for the changes. The South Boston Collaborative Center’s Annual Comedy Night is at hand.  It will take place on Friday evening, November 8, in Florian Hall at 55 Hallet Street, Dorchester.  And it will certainly be a Comedy Night.  The tentative arrangements for the comedians include Johnny P. and Artie “The Pharmacist” Januario, along with interludes of live music – please watch for postings in South Boston Online about the final roster of performers.  The November 8 Comedy Night promises to be an evening of enjoyment to remember. by Rick Winterson Willy Wilson, lovingly known  as “Mr. Hardware” of South Boston, experienced a true emergency at work, after he attended Grandparents Day at South Boston Catholic Academy.  His diabetic condition – first diagnosed when Willy had turned 30 - and the resulting neuropathy really flared up, making it necessary to amputate his left foot and part of his lower leg.  Willy is now in a wheelchair.  He has completed an arduous program at Spaulding Rehab in Charlestown.  In two weeks, he expects to be fitted with a prosthetic leg and foot.  His rehab will continue. And Willy also undergoes dialysis three times a week.  His daughter Kristen started a Facebook group seeking to find a compatible replacement kidney for him.  Tommy McGrath spotted [...]

Curley Center Renewal:  First Meeting

It was a full house at the Curley Center on Day Boulevard last evening, the 30th.   Several hundred concerned residents of South Boston and members of the Curley Center from all over the City (and beyond) showed up for the first introductory community meeting about the project to renew the Curley Community Center – commonly known as “the L”.   The meeting convened right at 6 p.m.  It took the following format:  Overview, Challenges, Opportunities, Schedule, and Discussion (including a Question-and-Answer session that lasted for nearly an hour).  Boston’s City of Operations Patrick Brophy hosted the meeting. by Rick Winterson     No one has to be told that South Boston is an unusual place.  It was annexed to the City of Boston 215 years ago in 1804, and certain areas in Southie still retains their original names, evoking a “once-upon-a-time” connection with Dorchester.  These names include Washington Village, whose brother neighborhood was Adams Village near Quincy, and of course, Dorchester Heights, the site that anchored the first Evacuation Day on March 17, 1776. Peggy Woods was born and raised in South Boston in an Irish-American family with deep cultural roots.  She and her sisters began dancing at an early age, and as a result of their hard work and determination, Peggy and Rose earned several awards at the regional and national level and hence developed their passion for Irish Dance.  Twenty five years ago, as young adults, Peggy and Roseann Woods launched their own Irish Dance School so they could preserve this strong aspect of Irish culture. Boston City Buildings Will Have Overdose Reversal Kits

Mayor Martin J. Walsh today announced the City of Boston will be installing opioid overdose reversal kits in municipal buildings, thanks to a $30,000 donation from Aetna. The donation will be used to install kits containing the overdose reversal medication naloxone (Narcan), clear instructions for its use, and other medical supplies to assist individuals who experience an overdose. Prior to implementation, the Mayor's Office of Recovery Services will offer on-site voluntary overdose prevention and naloxone administration trainings to all interested City employees. "Increasing access to naloxone has been a core strategy in the City's approach to countering the opioid epidemic," said Mayor Walsh. A few facts and figures:  In 1776, Thomas Jefferson drafted America’s final Declaration of Independence, making some last changes and adjustments.  This document was completed on July 4 that year.  Our Independence and the Declaration itself had been authorized a couple of days before the Fourth – 243 years ago.  The final version of the Declaration of Independence was approved, and then it was copied and sent out to the 13 colonies, where it was read to the eagerly awaiting public.  That custom continues down to this year of 2019.  The Declaration of Independence will be read from the balcony of the [...]

Special events taking place as part of the City of Boston’s annual July 4th celebration will require street closings and parking restrictions at select locations in Boston.  People coming into the City to enjoy the festivities are strongly encouraged not to drive their personal vehicles.  People coming into Boston to attend are encouraged not to drive their personal vehicles.  Information on Bluebikes, the regional bike share service, may be found at http://bluebikes.com and information on the MBTA may be found at www.mbta.com. For a faster return trip, the MBTA advises riders to purchase a round-trip rather than a one-way ticket. Walking is also a great way to move around Boston.
